Discussion topic on mana usage.

I've tried doing a couple of different strings in search, but I didn't come up with anything remotely recent about this topic, but I'm interested in opinions on mana pots during a fight.
I got into a discussion today inside Naxx with our (ironically Resto) Druid when I asked for a mana pot to use on Kel. He started railing on my and basically trying to call me a n00b cause "Lol I've never had to use one on my hunter, just go apect of the viper." The conversation went rather predictably after that.
Me: "lol -50% damage."
Him: "so, its only semp"
"temp"
"I'm able to keep 3200 all day with no pots at all." (Ironically, I was already above that for the entire run, close to 3800 average.)
Inevitably patch came up, and at which point he, rather seriously I take it, claimed he did "over 6800." TBH, that would be pretty sick considering the number of buffs we had, but I don't even believe a word of that (in 10 man no less, I have no need for mana in 25 mans at all) and just stopped even asking, just whispered our priest and got a stupid pot. However I did come up with just the perfect example of why we DO need a pot, but didn't even bother broaching the subject, despite the fact I've been in this exact scenario.
Boss hits 20% and said hunter has <800 mana (I've had it happen this week even.) He can fire off a Kill Shot, an Explosive Shot, and...? Should he go into Viper and take 50% on every shot, including Kill Shot? Cycle DH for Kill and Viper for everything else still taking a huge damage hit? Frankly, I find it irresponsible to not just pop a single potion and finish up the fight at full damage, ESPECIALLY since the Kill Shot portion of the fight can add a couple hundred DPS over the full fight. I've watched recount at the end, and the DPS number rises very quickly when you start to shoot them every 9 seconds.
In the interest of keeping an open mind, is there anything at all that I'm missing that really does just make me a noob for believing this? Hence, I ask for open discussion on the topic.
TL;DR, every hunter should have at least one mana potion, if for nothing else than finishing up the fight at full damage.
PS, incidentally I had to use the mana potion to keep shooting Kill shots on the very next fight.

Yeah as MM i use pots all time time. Even in 25 mans sometimes...Which was odd cause the last 25 man naxx i did we had at least 1 ret, a surv hunter and 2 spriests. And i had BoW the whole time. I could not figure out why i was running out of mana. Still don't know why lol. But mana pots are win. I try to save them for near 20% so i don't have to go viper at that point. Use viper at the beginning if needed. Also in KR's advanced guide he lists some other things that can give you a little mana.

I didn't mention in my original post but I'm survival, probably the most mana efficient of the trees. In 25 mans I can't give the mana away fast enough. In 10 mans I don't think I've ever really run with a Ret Pally, but we did have the mana spring and my replenishment, but you still run out of mana during the fights.
For something as simple as a single pot, I see no downside unless you're saving a health pot "just in case," but beyond that its time not spent in Viper, so I'll just continue on doing it.

Since you mentioned KT, that is one fight where I get to see Viper Sting really shine. I throw the occasional Viper Sting in there once my mana starts getting low and am fine for the most part.
Now I haven't figured out if this is costing me more DPS, due to no Serpent/Noxious Stings, than a stint in AotV, but at least I don't run the (minimal) risk of staying in AotV too long.
As far mana pots, I don't ever use them. I can see how they are handy and useful, but
meh

I had forgotten about the change to Viper allowing mana regen, maybe I should put that on my bars somewhere to use in the future for this scenario.
Kel is that special kind of annoying because half the fight is pretty much spent in viper with him blowing all your mana up. Maybe I just have bad luck, like our main healer that gets hit with Grobb's injection 3 times in a row EVERY single run.

I've thought about the Viper Sting issue a little since I'm running MM as my main spec now and I'd say Aspect of the Viper is probably the better choice. My thinking is that since Chimera shot is my main damage shot that I probably ought to leave serpent sting up to get the most out of Chim.
That is an interesting point, but it has me wondering if the Chimera return from Viper Sting would compare to the damage lost going into Viper. On the one hand, yes, you are keeping up the damage from serpent sting along with the +40% sting damage when Chimera hits. On the other, you are cutting all your damage in half effectively, so it would require a pretty extensive series of tests to get a final answer. I don't play MM so I certainly wouldn't be interested in making those tests though.
Obviously, stinging adds would be an amazing tool and one I've never thought of trying.
One thing I've found from SV is that all 3 ticks from Explosive shot return mana, and I usually end up getting spammed with blue text while it is on. Also, any special crits return mana as well, so I am in AotV much less than a minute.
