Ret pallies are treated well generally, but on Dreadmaul at least, they're in oversupply. If anything, you can see some pugs are actually saying "NO MORE DKS OR RET PALLIES" because they need more ranged dps. I'm not in a raiding guild, but we're in a similar position where we have an oversupply of melee dps, and not enough in the way of caster dps.

While it doesn't really matter because of the content, I've tanked several VoA & OS 25s where over half of them was paladin or death knight. I think the record was 9 DKs and 7 PLDs.

Are you choosing your dual spec to increase your chance of getting to a raid?
If yes, go for holy/prot, by a huge margin.
The initial prot gear is rep/crafted/emblems (you should have the emblems and rep already, if you've been running heroics for a while). Then, heroic and raid drops all the way.
I would rather go for a spec I like though, instead of what people are supposed to want.
The cookie cutter PvE ret spec is 0/17/54.

Srsly, i cant find a damn spot to place me under kel thuzad or emalon anymore.
And it was just me and a couple melee under Archimonde... back when windfury kicked @ss...
Oh well, enough with memories, anyways, play whatever spec you find more fun and stick to it, and you will be great at what you're doing.
My server atm is full of 1.5k dps ret palas and DKs, with dodge rating gemmed pvp gear.
So anything is good as long as you know what you're doing.
Though holy palas are more wanted in raiding, and easily successful in arena with a good partner.
