Overhaul
I was ret before and only stayed ret because I enjoyed seeing big numbers coming out. Lvling was easy, and I hit lvl 75 in two months, that is including the days I spent lvling my BS. I think it is this as easy lvling prot as ret (if you know how to play). If I were prot and lvling, I would probably this be doing orange and red quests, since survivability is so high. I did red and orange as ret and was able to, but they normally came very close and I was wearing top of the line gear since my hunter was funding my pally. If this is your first toon, I would stay prot since learning game mechanics will be important for you. Also it is best to do what you like best and what makes you feel comfortable. If you like you shield, stay prot. Prot also helps you get into groups, and is really nice if you know a healer so you can easily make groups yourself. Lvling in a spec that you are planning to play endgame has many advantages, so you might want to consider staying prot. But ret is very nice also, and you probably would lvl faster as ret if this is your first toon, since prot mainly grinds to lvl, requiring you to know where the best spots to grind mobs are.

What spec is best for you is: Personal Preference.
The fastest way to level as a paladin: Prot AoE
The fastest way to questing as a paladin: Ret
The easiest way to level as a paladin: Holy
Try each spec since all three are viable for leveling.
Whatever you find the funniest is always the fastest way for you.

Levelling my paladin without the advice of forums and whatnot, I actually did try all specs, and svirve is absolutely right.
Not having a shield just means that you might want to avoid the big pulls that you're used to as a Prot pally to start off with - take your time to learn what you can and can't do. I do recall being really frustrated when I switched from Prot to Ret at about L50 or so, and in hindsight, it's because I was still playing like a Prot pally.
Then again, hold out til L30 - being Prot becomes more unique, and a bit easier to handle, with Blessing of Sanctuary.

It's a 10% increase in stats.
But the 3% damage reduction is just the tip of the iceberg.
Everytime you block/dodge/parry an attack you
gain 2% of maximum mana
. Now that's the juicy part.

Excuse me, but how can this be?
If you don't mean that it's easier to heal instances all the way to 80 than quest, then I can't really see your point.
And if that *is* your point, I disagree on it being easier. More fun, yes, but not easier.
Well it's kinda hard to die if you can heal yourself for 15 minutes straight now aint it?
Easy as in requiring less skill than the other specs (tbh, i dont know what else easy could mean).
I already said prot was fastest and that ret was faster for questing.
If you honestly think any of the other builds are EASIER than holy i suggest you try leveling as holy.
Or support your claims since it's not easy knowing how to manage 10-15 mobs AoE grinding as prot.
It's not (as) easy being ret and having less than average survivability.
