The Argent Tournament's Purpose

So, I was reading through ArgentSun's Argent Tournament Guide, and I noticed a line that said:
...the heroes of Azeroth battle to determine who will face the horror Arthas has turned into...and who will go home.
So is that really the/a purpose of the Tournament? To see which side is more able to fight the Lich King?
This got me thinking about what later content patches will bring concerning the Tourney, besides the Colosseum. Will one of the sides have a way to prove themselves worthy and be able to (much later of course) fight the Lich King before the other?
Or am I overlooking the above quote entirely? =P

It's just recycling material. That was how BC was with the Aldor and the Scryers. Who was "most worthy" to face Illidan, as decided by the Naaru.

I think it's a way to motivate various heroes to train and get stronger so the world has a better chance at beating the Lich King.
This and it also brings the two opposing factions back together.
Fordring knows what the Wrathgate has done for the two sides, and the problems that will cause for the way on Arthas, and the tournament helps to reduce that rift, or at least channel it in a way so that the two sides dont realise they are helping the other.
Horribly badly claused sentence over.
