not exactly sure what the point in this thread is... if you are trying to ask which is faster to level prot vs ret its a close ish call.
Ret if you want to quest non-stop.
Prot if you want to AoE grind your way up.
Although its not quite as black and white as this, that is the bare basics.
And btw if you do plan to level as prot, then doing runs (instancing?) is very much advised to pick up that piece of gear you wont replace for a fair few levels...

Yeah. It sure does take 5 min to kill a mob as prot.
Great guide would read again.

TL;DR version:
this is probably one of the main posts. i have leveled a ret and a prot pally and i had around about the same played time. it all depends on how you play your toon. if you like to smack things with a big weapon and get 2 hitted level ret. if you want to take 5 minutes killing 1 mob but never die level prot. its all about what you enjoy and what patients u have with the game. personally i loved prot because u can pull 15 mobs and finish full health.
guide for leveling:
dont waste time doing runs
focus on questing
level ret from 1-40
after that prot is best till about 70
then go whatever spec you please play your pally the way u want it to be played.
Pallies rock.

I have leveled my pally to 80 and went Ret the whole way. I actually respecced to prot twice, both times it lasted for about half a level. I guarantee you questing is much faster than AOE grinding, and as stated above there are way too many casters that won;t follow you to be able to AOE grind effectively. I went Ret till 80, then switched to prot to tank for heroics and raids. Do what you enjoy, but if your asking, my advice is give ret a try for a few levels and see how much faster you can level. Once you hit 75 or 80, then think about going Prot.

So basically what you just said is "i dont know how to properly AOE grind and kept trying to AoE casters. I R TEH RET! AOE grinding sux cuz casters toss teh fiarballz!"
The people that got to 70 and 80 first on nearly any realm you ask did not do it by questing as non AoE. I got from 72-78 in around 14 hours. Not possible by questing.

I leveled a bit as both, I noticed only a few differences.
Ret
: Big Numbers, damage is very bursty with leads to fast 1v1 kills. Zero downtime
Prot
: Smaller Numbers, takes about the same amount of time to kill 10 mobs as it does to kill 1, so you are best off doing a stupidly large pull while questing, even if you don't really have to. Also zero downtime.
