For me, I've worked as a cashier and it really was a relief when someone was honest and handed back the extra money I handed out by accident. While I am good at my job, I do make mistakes. How I live my real life is reflected in how I play WoW. So I would hand back the extra gold that was given to me in error.
Would I be tempted to keep it? Yes, I could use the coin since I am not a player with 30K of gold in the bank.
Would I expect other people to hold onto the gold if I gave it away in error? Yes, I would, greed is an understandable motive that is very common.

I'd return it if you were a member of a respected raiding guild in order to maintain good relations. It has nothing to do with morals, simply what benefits me most in the long run. If you're some random scrub then I won't be affected, but if you're in a respectable guild then I can potentially get screwed in the long run.

You can't expect somebody to give it back unfortunately, even if I'm a little surprised the GMs don't cover that in their dealings with folks getting scammed. I'm guessing the policy is that because you put the amount in the trade window you screwed yourself. Sucks to hear about it dude. :(
I'd give it back for sure, and have done so for guildies and non-guildies alike. For whatever reason though they're usually far more guilty of putting odd/unnecessary but valuable mats in the trade window with me rather than too much gold. Wouldn't want to have it done to me so I won't do it to somebody else.

How does this situation have "nothing to do with morals"....yes its a game and all but really, this is a moral judgment call.
I think its hilarious that someone can care about RAIDING relations yet have no qualms over pretty much mugging someone over a typo.
Personally if i was the GM in this situation id at least question the guy about it.
I guess it's the age old internet anonymity aspect kicking in.
Hell in real life you can bet your ass over something like that there are some folks that would hunt you down and "make it right".
I would chalk it up to "lol kids" but I know 4 year olds with more moral fiber than that. /rant

If the person is in a well known guild or guild that is careful with their reputation take it up with their officers. They likely will punish that person. One person on my realm was RPing sex scenes out in trade. I talked to an officer (officer of that person's guild was a friend of mine) and they kicked the person that did that in trade and banned them from all future raids.

I think it would depend on the persons attitude to be honest.
Once I bought an Item on AH for 1s - the person whispered me that it was meant to be 100g and he had listed it wrongly (I strongly suspect he was swapping between horde/alliance and not listing it wrongly but there you go). He started whispering me with abuse, threats and spam. He didn't explain and ask politely, he called me a thief and started swearing before he'd even explained it was "mislisted". If he had been nice perhaps I would have been nice back, as it was I added him to ignore because he was downright annoying.
I think that if someone was genuinely upset and asked politely/nicely then I would give it back. Everything comes back to you. You don't know that the person doesn't have an alt or is in a good guild or one day won't be a really good player and in a position to help you and might remember you. Or he might have friends, relatives, etc. who can either help you or hate you. I have people who did bad things to me that I remember and treat differently now if they want to raid with me, join my guild, get enchants or help etc.
If on the other hand the person was aggressive and/or abusive (at the end of the day it was their mistake and they should realise that, not blame the recipient for their stupidity) then I would add them to ignore and put the money in my guild bank.
I like to think if you are nice and polite and respectful of other players at least some of them will be the same back to you, there is definitely a form of WoW Karma.
