be respectful to other classes when rolling on items that are a minor upgrade for your own and not tailored (itemized) for your classHmmm, I agree about the 'respectful' part. If it is a greater upgrade for a fellow guildie than for me, sure I can pass.
But on the 'not tailored for your class' part I disagree. Indeed, polearms may not have strength, but otherwise, some of them are better than equivalent ilvl maces, swords or axes. Example:
Wraith Spear vs. Titansteel Destroyer vs. Demise
. Sure, the Titansteel Destroyer and Demise provide strength. But Wraith Spear provides more than 3% crit for weapon based attacks (melee swings, BS, OB and FS), 1.5% crit for spells (IT and HB) and higher weapon damage by itself. Also haste is not at all a wasted stat for Death Knights, as melee swings always have a place in the top 3 damaging abilities, with 23-25% of total damage.
In 3.1, when the
Rune of Razorice
will be the rune of choice for Frost DPS by providing a 10% frost damage bonus @ 5 stacks (following the reduction of Fallen Crusader from
30%
to
15%
bonus strength), strength will matter even less in this comparison. Wraith Spear will provide higher Obliterates and Frost Strikes at the cost of slightly lower Howling Blasts. Wraith Spear is a winner in both cases (current state and 3.1 state).
OK, this was more of a side note anyway. I'll get to my current question now.
In 3.1, since we'll have access to
Glyph of Howling Blast
and the viability of Unbreakable Armor for DPS, the 'standard' single target cycle, IT > BT > BS > OB x 2 > FS x 3 (with 4xT7 set) will turn into HB > OB > BT > UA > BS > FS x 2 as a starter and after this, the cycle would go on as standard with IT > BS > OB x 2 > FS x 3?
However, I have a hunch that giving up Glyph of Icy Touch (10 extra RP) for Glyph of Howling Blast for the opening rotation to allow Unbreakable Armor will end up in lower overall damage after 4xT7 set bonus is broken. We must keep in mind that using one Icy Touch and two Obliterates per cycle (with glyph of IT, Chill of the Grave and 4xT7 bonus) is the only thing allowing us to use 3 Frost Strikes.
Currently with Butchery, IT > BS > OB x 2 generates 118 RP (= 3 FS). Giving up Glyph of IT leaves us with 108 RP, still enough for 3 FS. Giving up 4xT7 instead of Glyph leaves us with 98 RP, again enough for 3 FS. But giving up both Glyph of IT and 4xT7 will generate only 88 RP per cycle, no longer enough for 3 FS. Indeed, Rime procs will provide enough RP for 3 Frost Strikes but what if Rime does not proc? I prefer the guaranteed 3 Frost Strikes with the possibility that Rime will give me RP for 4 FS per cycle from time to time.
It is my reasoning so far that it is not worth picking up Glyph of Howling Blast for DPS. Only for tanking.
I would be glad to see your opinion about the DPS glyph setup in 3.1. In my opinion, the 'classic' Frost Strike + Obliterate + Icy Touch glyph combo remains the best choice. 10 additional RP per cycle from IT is necessary after breaking 4xT7 IMO.

Yea, I find there's a huge bias against Frost Strike, labeling it as a "runic dump"
Perhaps you do not know the meaning of the phrase?
Does Frost Strike use runic power? Yes
Does using Frost Strike cause your runic power to go down? Yes
Therefore your runic power goes down (ie: is dumped) whenever you use the ability.
"runic dump" does not mean its a worthless ability thats just an afterthought when you have too much runic power. it means its an ability that uses runic power, and you use it as your "runic dump" whenever you have enough runic power to use it.
Any ability that uses runic power and is in a standard rotation to use up runic power is by definition a "runic dump".

Hello Lynri,
This is a great thread and you're a hero for making it happen.
Allow me to run this by you doctor:
I am thinking this spec for 3.1
http://ptr.wowhead.com/?talent=jfVMVZG0xxAbckf0Vostc
with Glyphs of Obliterate, Howling Blast and Frost Strike
My current DPS kit is below:
http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Anachronos&n=Nameislegion
Can you suggest a viable DPS rotation?
Thank You
MM

What about using HB on multiple targets?
When you have Chill of the Grave it gives you, and I may have to double check my math, but this is what my calculations say:
HB + CotG = approximately 1.326 Bajillion runic power. (+/- 0.742 Zallion RP depending on the number of adds)
Or did they fix that on the PTR?
P.S.: If they won't sticky this, then we'll bump it every day! :D

You're right in the fact that Wraith Spear does out do both Demise and Titansteel but for an entirely different reason. I'd like to point out not the dps of the weapon but the Weapon Damage, Wraith clearly has the highest top end, and brings the most to the board as 2 of our major hitting abilities are based pretty much off thisUuuugh yeah in fact I skipped the main reason for which the Wraith Spear was better :)) Meh, I got my mind tucked into more matters. Indeed that was the reason I was going to mention last as the most important. Having a lower swing timer, the Wraith Spear has higher weapon damage. Therefore it provides higher Obliterates and Frost Strikes. THAT is Frost DPS bread and butter. Correct.
You forget to mention though that FC rune will have an increased proc chanceAt the time I wrote that, I wasn't yet aware of the fact that they decided to
double
the proc rate. So in the end, we won't have those huge AP spikes with +30% strength for a short duration, but a lower +15% strength boost for a double time. On the long run and averaging things out, it's almost the same for boss fights (5 minutes or longer). But for AoE damage, it is a negative impact. Having HB crit on 10 targets for 9K (with the 30% Fallen Crusader active) won't happen again too soon with the new 15% formula.
And I noticed another thing, reported on some forums from the PTR testing. Razorice got pwnd back to 5% @5stacks. So in the end Fallen Crusader will remain the rune of choice I guess... But we'll have to wait and see the actual build that will make its way to live servers.
