*takes a deep breath*
why "equal" zuxia?
there are several logical reasons to favour boss damage over trash damage in pursuit of "the ideal". what are the reasons to even take trash damage into consideration?

Sorry about wall of text, but wanted to save some typing. This is only one instance of reasons throughout the entire post.
>.< wall of text is right, my heart sank when you expected me to read all that again.
you say that a raid leader should take it into account, and you seem to think this answers my question but it doesn't. why should they?
good boss dps gives tangible rewards, trash dps doesn't give any. i'm asking why is it equally worthy?
also, damage meters show the overall damage all the time and you can sometimes split the results to show more detailed information about a boss fight specifically (or use WWS etc). my point is, everyone in the raid knows who's doing well in the overall meters. the thing is, though, if the person on top of the meters isn't on top of the boss meters then there's a problem with their spec/gear/rotation. they're not performing when they're needed to.
no educated player is going to say "well they're the trash dps person, that's their thing". trash dps is easy. you can do it with a terrible spec and with terrible gear. boss dps is hard and any decent raid leader wants players who are willing to put time in on their spec/gear/rotation to further the raid's progress.

of course there can be aberrations to the norm but, clearly, the answer is to get a sample of boss fights to assess someone's ability, not a sample of trash fights.
for example, you go to wow web stats after a raid and click 'all bosses' to get anidea of how someone does. they may have had a bad fight or two (maybe grobulus kept on poisoning them so they spent most of the fight running away) but it would all even out over a full night of boss fights.
as i've said, this is what raid leaders do every day. over the course of a full raid (or even several weeks worth of raids) if a DPSer is consistently low on boss fights then there IS a problem, irrespective of their output on trash. i would expect a class leader to look at these things and give that player some advice on they spec or gear.
...and this is kinda what's going on here. you've fooled yourself into thinking that it's ok to be the 'trash damage guy'. i'm trying to give you some solid advice that this isn't a good attitude for serious raiding.

doing more dps but less damage simply means that you've spent less seconds doing the damage.
there are various reasons this could have happened, the most likely being a death.
