EVERY
pre - expansion and expansion day for wow has always been crappy. when the burning crusade came out alot of people couldn't make blood elves or draenei as well as enter the ghostlands and other expansion areas. The servers were resetting like crazy. they are just fixing it so we don't have to experience this again.
BLIZZARD
is well aware that we are upset about this downtime but they only got so many people that can fix the problems. I don't mind the downtime because they are fixing a problem that most people didn't even get to experience and are
ROLLBACKING
the realm to when it was working. It will take a while to rollback all of the servers. i am also stating that they will be rollbacking because they aren't going to go through over 11 million characters in 3 hours and delete these bugged items.
Actually roll back restore time is more a function of the type of hardware and the way that you manage the process, not the amount of data. By that I mean that restore times are extremely non-linear. With a proper process and schema design it does not take 10 times longer to restore 100GB than 10GB.
There is another aspect that is worth understanding. Many of these problems CAN be solved or substantially mitigated by spending money. Very large enterprise class database servers, including many tera-bytes of disk array storage cost in the neighborhood of $250K. Blizzard makes about $165 million a month. With the revenue from one month they can construct a complete fall back server environment where they clone everything. These problems while occasional have occurred regularly and with regard to major content patches or expansions quite predictably. We have a thread here about betting on how bad server stability will be, not about whether it will occur.
Is this difficult sure. Do mission critical applications deal with this every day. Yes. For the revenue that is produced by the game Blizzard should do a much better job.

Fascinating, when children are frustrated over not being able to play their favorite game, they devolve into personal attacks launched anonymously at people they've never met and never will. The adults and kids with brains will agree that you should settle down. Personally I've been sick of being bukkake'd with that brand of stupid since AOL 3.0 chatrooms.
Database problems... sounds like complications rolling back all the people who went and abused the glitch that allowed them to buy those epics. I think they all should have known better and should spawn into the game naked, all gear missing. Nothing sends the message 'Don't abuse glitches, report them!' stronger than a massive ass kicking. Then again, a massive ass kicking can really drive home any good message. This is probably not news for the subjects of my first paragraph, for whom silence is the only answer in the real world, because venting their silly frustrations and angst on other people in person has likely earned them a few good poundings.

Normally when they have to rollback the realm it is a sign of desperation. Roll backs do nothing but !@#$ people off. So, this isn't going to be over for a long time if they roll back the realms. The thing I don't understand is why it matter so much that people just got some good gear for next to nothing that will be replaced by the time they hit 80 anyways. Who cares really. Its not that huge of a deal. Blizzard should have just let it go and made damn sure that pvp gear that was level 80 wasn't bugged. A few people lost some in game mails. Big freaking deal there too. I don't think the problem as of late is with the down time. I think it is with them bringing the servers down to fix problems that seem so insignificant.

Wow, people, can't you be civil to each other?
And could I just remind you all one of the main rules of the intratubes: There are no girls on the internet. So stfu about husbands boyfriends or whatever. As far as I'm concerned you're all dudes, all sitting there holding your breath until servers come up. And just in case you start telling me how eventful your life is without WoW: you're on wowhead while wow is down precisely because you're not doing anything else, waiting to hop into the virtual world. :P Not that I'm much different today.
Thank you.

don't even communicate with their customers, and basically tell you to go f yourself when you complain about it.
and this is different from wow, how?
WoW gives etas, has very awesome tech support (as compared to other games I have played), and even gives credits when there are problems. Find me an example of one other company ever giving their players an actual credit. I've never seen it from any other company.
