It's not that bad. Most of the cards are cheaper than their paper versions.
If you buy singles, sure. If you want to practice drafting, or do a sealed event? Good luck. Also, it's almost impossible to find sellers that stock older singles that are out of Standard for the most part, I find.

For MTGO? I put together a deck with exactly one card from Standard (Blistercoil Weird). Everything else was from past blocks. It was way easy to grab a bit and get the deck together.

How far past? Try looking for good stuff from Ravnica (Life From the Loam, Loxodon Heirarch, hell, even watchwolf, etc), Time Spiral, or before. They just aren't there. Sure, you can pick up some commons, or reprints, but it's very difficult to find those kinds of singles without pulling your hair out searching, I find.

Are you sure you're using the marketplace and/or bots correctly? I've never not been able to find a card I want, going back 10 years of sets.

Who knows, maybe not. I've been looking for a playset of Life From the Loam, Terravore, and a couple of other things to put together a deck, and I just can't find them.
But even still, I think it's incredibly stupid that there's no sort of one-stop posting board that you can search for individual cards by. Even if they had some sort of system where consistent sellers/traders could list themselves as open to a server-wide search, and I could just look for a card on the marketplace, that would be a huge step forward.

Speaking of card prices, I spent $9 in MTGO to built a deck that cost me $30 IRL. It's a
Red and Black Madness deck
and actually works rather well in casual Modern. In fact, it works better than my IRL based version, as it has 2 more Zombie Infestations and 3 Dragonskull Summits as replacements to my Rakdos Carnariums.

Think of the bots as actual physical stores. If you get a couple fully-stocked bots, there should almost never be a card you can't pick up, unless it's a really rare card, in which case, that's what you want to use the market search for.
For instance, my main go-to bots are CardCaddy, CardWareHouse the Academy Sellbots (Academy_Sellbot, Academy_Sellbot2, and Academy_Sellbot3). And I was able to find several available playsets of both Life From the Loam and Terravore across those.

So, put together a BW token deck. I didn't have money for Thoughtseizes, Heroes of Bladehold or any of the Planeswalkers (which are still less expensive than RL ones), so I put in Long-Forgotten Gohei, Disfigure and Duress (along with a Vault of the Archangel or two). It works pretty well, and it's a blast to play.

I have to say, for me, I love my blue Flying/Islandwalker Deck. It works mainly because of one card I have, Stormtide Leviathan (8/8 with Islandwalk that turns all lands to islands in addition to their other type and Creatures without flying or islandwalk cannot attack). It's rather weak early from what I've tried, but if I get the leviathan out it gets rather deadly.
The other deck I have is a pentacolor with Morgis, God of Slaughter; Purphoros, God of the Forge; Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis; Melek, Izzet Paragon; Spirit of Resistance (If you control a permanent of each color, prevent all damage that would be dealt to you.) and a Kalonian Hydra.
Side note, appologies for potential necro >.>

That necro really contributed to the conversation.
It's almost as if every format in the game is more diverse than it was back then.
