Tank, healer, 3 dps.
Specifically?
Pally Tank (Pally's hold group aggro better than Warrior's)
Mage - Poly + Food + AI
Lock x 2 - SS, HS, MOAR DOTZ
Healer - All 3 are great. Pally has DI, Priests have Fort and 2 Healing Trees, Druids have Brez

For the maximum buff/utility coverage:
Mage
Druid
Priest
Paladin
Shaman or Warlock.
Priest to heal (holy in lower levels, at leisure then), Paladin to tank. I would recomend the druid to go balance since there are few melees, and extra critical would serve the mage and druid better. For the same reasons, Shaman could go Elemental. If you're having a lack of melee power and prefer to have it, said shaman could go enhancement instead, and the druid Feral.
You would cover Totems or Soulstone/Healthstone, Arcane Intelect, MotW, Blessings, Fort, Spirit, SProt. You would only miss (Totems or soul/healthstone), Hunter Aspect (the Nature resist one is covered by the shaman tough), Warrior Shout (Blesing of Might present tough), and DK horn.
edit:
Healer - All 3 are great. Pally has DI, Priests have Fort and 2 Healing Trees, Druids have Brez
Poor shamans :'(

And I'd like to think my class can do more than kill themselves to prevent the minor annoyance of paying for gear repairs. :(

Prot Pally (Tanking, Buffs, good group aggro)
Mage (DPS, Food, AI buff)
Shadow Priest (DPS, Buffs)
Elemental Shaman (DPS, Lust, totems, self rez, goes well with casters)
Resto Druid (Heals, Buffs, battle rez)
This class combo works well as they all help each other a lot, all dps are casters so they are not taking melee damage, you get all the good buffs.

Bet you dont dislike their buffs.
Bet I don't like them either. Would prefer a Pally/Druid/Priest buff instead.

If you have 5 friends I would go with the following:
1 DK Tank/DPS
1 Paladin Tank/DPS
1 Druid Healer / Feral
1 Priest Healer (Disc maybe later) / Shadow
1 Shaman Elemental / Healer
Can fly through 5 mans with 1 Tank, 1 Healer, and 3 DPS. You 5 will be the core of any raid you want to start with 2 Tanks and 3 possible healers. You got GotW, Fort, Spirit, Totems, Bloodlust, and Kings to play with. Just grab some dps (which there are plenty of) and run your raids.

So how do you see that leveling thing with a Death Knight involved? That would leave 4 players that level together and 1 aloner...
Druid
Loladin/Warrior
Mage/Warlock
Priest
Shaman/Rogue

Pick any class, you want. At around 55-58, switch to the DK. It'll work even if its a new account as they would have a level 55 before they switched over.
