So I used to play wow from just before burning crusade till middle of Lich King, then picked it back up for a couple months of cata (during deathwing endgame). I raided heavily during all of my time (Illidan downed before sunwell was released - best raid content I've seen yet in wow). Raiding was truly challenging back then. It was an accomplishment to progress. The changes they've made we're a big cause of me quitting.
But I digress - my question is two parts -
I would like to know if endgame has any challenge to it anymore, if its worth coming back to wow for it. Is it as rewarding as it once was? Or does LFR still trump true efforts from a hard progression guild?
And I would like to know what classes and specs are being favored right now for endgame. I'm interested in getting my 85 rogue into pve or is it outclassed by something other? I also used to heal extensively on Druid and shaman, any info on how they're doing? Also what's the best/worse class - spec for dps and healing right now?
A lot of questions but before I sacrifice more money to the blizzard gods I would like to know what in getting (back) into.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Dairyprinces -85 resto/feral Druid

LFR has never been anything near a hard progression guild. Is is, as it always has been, an insanely easy way for people to see the scenery in raids.
Now, for the (somewhat) crummy part. It does still reward (mostly) the same gear as both normal and Heroic raids do, just at a lower iLevel. You can gear a toon out with just LFR, Valor, and Crafted gear, and be just as capable and effective in any raid as someone who suffers through Heroic progression is. Sure, you are going to have a lower iLevel, but there is really not that much difference between a well played toon with a 496 avg iLevel, and the same toon with a 510 avg.
So the call is really yours. If you want to be a "special snowflake", you are out of luck. LFR gear looks the same, and is plenty effective, so all those hours of wiping and grinding Heroics are not going to make you stand out. Now if you are in it for the challenge, heroic raids, and even some normal modes are still plenty tough...assuming you have the guild that will even attempt them.

Play what you want, what you like, and what you are good at. Nearly every class / spec combo is viable, and nearly equal right now. Blizz has all but eliminated the Flavor of the Month class. If any class starts to show a distinct advantage, they get nerfed, or everyone else gets buffed.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. No more flavor of the week huh? Glad blizzard pulled their &*!@ together on that.

If your set on being a part of a serious raiding guild...there are remnants from early days that still do it. Do a little research and I'm sure you can find one that matches your requirements for satisfaction.
If your looking for an overall atmosphere to raiding that was in place during TBC...forget it.
LFR is the lay of land these days. If precision of action is a stickler for you...avoid LFR :P

Thank you all for the info!
My follow up question would be what classes healer and dps wise do you see the least? Seeing as how the loot system has changed I'm looking for the least common classes to roll thus less competition for gear. I've always had good luck with my resto Druid as most healers were either holy pallys (int plate) and resto shamans (int mail). The int leather was usually uncontested due to not many boomkins and fewer competing resto Druids. Thank you again for the replies! Keep em coming!
Ps I also have no idea about monks and their gear. How does that come into play with loot?

Monks use Leather with either Agi/Stam (tank/dps) or Int/Stam (healer).
Cheers.

I'll be writing my honest opinion from as far as I've observed;
Deathknights
and also
Warriors
(especially in PvP) are the most overpowered melee dpsers, perhaps the most buffed ones by Blizzard. Warriors are also still best at tanking.
Warlocks
and then
Mages
are rather powerful range dpsers.
Holy Paladins
are ridiculously better than other healers especially in terms of PvP. Nevertheless, since you don't have Paladin I'd recommend you to go for your
resto Druid
to beat healing meters.
My main is enhancement Shaman and her offspec is resto. So I can directly tell you that
resto Shamans
are much more effective raid healers than they were in Cataclysm. Same goes for enhancement spec. You should also experience
enhancement Shaman
that is also potent melee/bit ranged raid dpser. It's always been so pleasurable and an addiction for me to play enhancement Shaman. I don't think you'd ever regret trying it out.
In addition, none of the fully LFR geared player can race with heroic geared ones. There would be somewhat good amount of dps/hps difference between.
If you also wonder how the raid difficulities are.. Uhm.. MoP raid instances are just as easy as Dragon Soul times. As you can appreciate WotLK and TBC in particular had rather competitive, requiring much more player skill and experience raid instances. They were really original and difficult comparing to current faceroll raids. If you were to compare that times with MoP, don't even attempt.
Still, WoW is best MMO.

In order to respond your last question;
I really see Monks are the fewest when it comes for raiding or for some serious PvP. People are generally levelling them and then just passing over. It's because monks ain't easy class to play as dpser and healer. They do require good focus, experience, a good knowledge, swiftness and ability to be played and taste some joy. Not to mention they are indeed amusing to play with.
On top of that, I'd say resto Shamans exist less than resto Druids.
By the way, Monks share the same tier with Hunter, Shaman and Warrior.

Priest.
You can use the same gear for healing and DPS...since spirit=hit for Spriest and transmog back and forth as gears changes to maintain hit cap.
Even as a DPS Spriest you can apply residual heals.
In LFR, I'm often top ten DPS and usually next on the list after the qued healers for overall heals.
It all depends on the group. The better the heals, the more DPS I can do.
Priest=Versatility

I don't know what healers you talk to, but I know I love it when I get some help with heals. Nothing major, but if a dps can use a CD that will make them take less damage or heal them a little I appreciate it. Most classes have something that will do this. Was also helpful somewhat when our dps Druids would use tranquility when in a tight healing spot.
Really love it when tanks do that. While doing Dragon Soul, I loved it when our tanks took hardly any damage. It let me switch to lightning bolt so I could recover some mana.
And don't forget that Druids also get the spirit=hit ability.

Same goes for Shaman as well, same gear healing and DPS, spirit=hit, Shaman can do heals as DPS, etc..
Maybe heals not as much but Shaman add utility priest cannot like Hero / Bloodlust, Elemental pets, and we can still heal quite a bit.
I wouldn't say you can be top DPS *AND* still provide heals, not possible since you can't do 2 things at once.... maybe you can help in critical situations but top DPS and top 10 heals just isn't possible to maintain... Besides in a good group heals don't NEED assistance, unless one dies. Some heals don't like you to interfere with their job.
Not sure if your talking about your class or mine, but I can assure you I am in top ten in Both.
With Halo that heals the whole group while doing damage to the targets and Vampiric Embrace which I pop during a critical phase that heals for 15 secs using my DPS and also all the group heals I do while self casting prayer of mending, finally the heals I put on myself to take the pressure off the healers.
I have one standing rule for LFR...stay alive. In a fight like Galaron, where the LFR nubs keep causing crush, my residual heals do save the day.
Top ten is not that hard. I'm nowhere near the amount of heals the qued healers do, but after them it's usually me.
Now in a more traditional setting like guild run normal/heroic, then an Spriest can play a more traditional role of DPS.
