Why does exalted status have 999 points?

I've never quite understood the extra reputation points that fill up after hitting exalted status. Once we hit exalted there is another 999 points which is an insignificant amount compared to the number between reverted and exalted. I always fill up these last few points but I must be missing something obvious somewhere because I'm still not sure what they are for. Any ideas?
Cheers.

Just for fun and to drive OCD players nuts because they can't get 999/1000.

Seems a strange one. It's like hitting max level and then still having a couple of mobs worth of XP to fill.

It's just a relic of how the reputation system was implemented back then. It was probably easier than to have the reputation bar disappear/transform into something else when Exalted, so it just became another, but meaningless progress bar.

I always thought it was pretty obvious. As Whaddafack said, the primary difference between EXP and Rep is that you can't lose EXP. So the rep serves as a way to prevent you from instantly losing the Exalted status because you killed a mob that causes you to lose rep.
I never understood why some of the "exalted" requirements was "get to 999/1000". If it requires exalted, then exalted should be enough. Pretty happy they got rid of that malplaced requirement. It's pretty much the equivalent of saying "You need to be 9000/21000 into revered to get this quest."

They actually do have those. The Tillers rep and Landfall dailies both give out quests based upon how far you are into a level of rep (Be it Revered or Honored)

I believe exalted discounts only apply at 999/1000.
Far as I can recall, nope that was never in game.

It is indeed a buffer or cushion for players so they do not backslide into Revered. Also, I do recall some game elements requiring 999 exalted, though I cannot remember what it was. I haven't played in two years, though~
