Could someone please explain tiered armour sets?

Hello,
Many patch previews show funky pictures of e.g. "Tier 13" armour sets. Could anyone answer a couple of questions about them please? I'm assuming that they are matching pieces that complement each other's stats specifically for a class? Are they only looted within Raids? Is a complete set available in one raid? Or would a player get a complete set from running different raids looking for random rare drops? Cheers.

They are class specific, and they provide special bonuses if you wear 2/5 or 4/5 pieces from the set. For example, the mistweaver monk T13 reduces the cost of surging mists if you wear 2 pieces, and increases the healing done by enveloping mist by 25% if you wear 4. There's no bonus for wearing the full set of 5. Each tier has a different effect but the overall idea is usually the same, there's also a separate set for healing, DPS, and tanking if you're a hybrid class.

For anything current, yes. Some tiers could be bought with justice points and upgraded later through raiding, some tiers only sold 3 pieces for JP. Right now though, T13 is entirely from raids (Heart of Fear and Terrace of Endless Spring) and you get them in the form of a token. Trade the token in, and you get your armor. You can get them from LFR, Normals, and Heroic, with each level of difficulty giving better tier armor.

Cheers for the help, that's much clearer. I'd had two pieces of Raging Elements armour bought with JPs, during Cataclysm but wasn't sure is that was what a tiered set was.

There is some confusion sometimes because many times a ´tier´ includes more than one raid. Like when MoP launched, it included 3 different raids, but they were all part of one tier. A tier just means basically ´all the raids released around the same time´.... but sometimes, like in the upcoming 5.2 patch, an entire tier will consist of only one raid...so you can get all the pieces from that single raid.

I have sometimes seen armor that is of the same item level as a set piece also referred to as being of that Tier although strictly speaking it's more of a Tier equivalent.
