Heya,
Quick question,
Grand prize winner, DementedRogue, his accounts stats are as follows:
Quick Facts
Last visit: 7 days ago
Consecutive visits: 0
Reputation: 159

Forum posts: 1 (1)
So basically, it's an account made specifically to join that event.
Which raises the question, did he submit more than one entry using different accounts created specifically for this purpose?
Any way to check I.P's?
I just wanted to see who the winner was and came up with this question :P
Cheers,
Shini.

"By the time the Wowhead Staff announce a winner, they've filtered out bogus entries, bots, multiple submissions, etc. It's kind of mean to suggest the winner doesn't "deserve it" after the fact."
That was pretty much all i was asking, if you'd read my post :P
Ty & Cheers.
Shinni.

I can tell you that we do our best during every contest to ensure there are no duplicate entries or any foul play before announcing the winners.
I will confirm to you though, that no other account on Wowhead shares the Grand Prize winners credentials.

That's exactly true. Most of the people who frequent Wowhead aren't even registered members. If they wish to participate in a contest then they're forced to register. That's why it seems so often that new members win contests, because they're typically the majority of entries.

It's also worth pointing out that the user of the month program is fairly well out of reach for users who are registered but not active on the site.

In my opinion. These type of contests are more for enticing new accounts and users. While it is open to everyone, it more of an advertising ploy to get more users.
As for tracking IPs, that is NOT the best way to find users with multiple accounts. This will not work mainly because of the way IPs work. Yes every computer has an IP, but 99% of the time that IP is assigned by the Modem itself and it may change often. The Modem has a specific IP that is assigned by the Internet Provider and is the one that can be tracked and verified.
The problem comes up when there are multiple actual authentic users under one single ISP service. College students as an example, or siblings in a family. I have an account, My sister has an account, and my father has an account. We all use the same Internet Provider in the same house, therefore from Wowheads view we are the same person. Dorms and Colleges do the same thing.
I hope this clarifies a little.

If a system couldn't distinguish between multiple legitimate users using the same IP it'd have been laughing stock ten years ago, let alone now. If you, your sister and your father all created your accounts using the same computer within minutes of each other and then entered the same contest on all three accounts you might have tripped a wire in the system.
People who actually TRY to create multiple accounts in order to improve their chances of winning a contest of this type will likely also attempt to avoid what they believe will risk their scheme being discovered, which needs to be taken into account.
I'm sure IPs are being looked it but it's far from the only thing that can be used, and Wowhead has been doing this sort of thing for a long time - the staff probably knows what to look for by now.

It is possible, but there are reasons for having separate usernames and email addresses. There are many ways to distinguish. Also, we have 3 desktops and 4 laptops, therefore we don't use the same computers. Most users these days have their own desktop or laptop.

I'm pretty sure its not going by mac addresse, but by IP history etc. I remember having quite a few tools for something as simple as phpbb board to figure out if someone had more than one account (or if an anonymous poster was the same poster as another anonymous poster).
Though no tool can really pick up on you completely deparmentalizing your accounts - for instance, my GF and I could have an account each, and it would not be cheating, but would be picked up by some tools (we have the same internal IP for one thing, even the same external IP as a lot of other people due to the way our provider is set up, despite using different computers) - however we would have different header info, which could differentiate us, though I wouldn't be surprised in such a case if it needed to be manually sorted out.
Bottom line, as admin of a site you have a lot of ways to track whether 2 different entrants are the same person or not - and some of those will throw up false positives as well as false negatives.
