of course, everything else being the same or comparable. i have been playing only for a year and i know i still have a lot to learn. i was wondering if a priest, for instance, could be as or more effective than mail or plate wearing dps in dungeons.

Any class can beat another class in damage done, under the right circumstances.
There is rarely any "intended" disparity in the damage dealt, unless it is for "PvP Balance reasons" as they call it.
Generally speaking: Skill means a lot more than the class you are playing.
In reality: Some classes are just more imbalanced than others, and will have the edge because of that. Like Feral Druids who had a hillariously overpowered Swipe, Survival Hunters who could easily do 25% more DPS than anyone else in single target... Stuff like that. Oh, and they got nerfed. Kind of.

Troll?
Not sure how his characters race has anything to do with his question. Seems like a attempt to play the racial card.

i know that in on on one fight in battlegrounds, my priest almost always loses from mail or plate. as far as i can see it is not so much a metter of armor, after all a priest has a very good magical armor, than it is fighting means. a priest has a small edge with channel spells, but as soon as he loses contact because he must heal himself, he does not stand a chance anymore.

I'm not entirely sure the WoW community should keep using the word "skill" to mean "memorized the 4-button rotation/priority queue" plus "uses every gcd". I know I did it in my reply, and Blues tend to use it to appease "hard core raiders" because everyone likes feeling that they're "good" at the game (or at least better than the next guy)... but really for the same gearing, the difference between "okay" dps and "great" dps is about fifteen minutes of reading a forum or Noxxic (or a plugin that lights up the buttons for you).
Okay, yes, there are edge cases where class knowledge goes beyond the steady-state rotation/queue and all your "oh crap" buttons come into play... but it's really not that common anymore for, say, a mage or rogue to solo the last 4% of a boss fight because the player knows how to use every tool in their kit.
Spoken like someone that doesn't do hard mode raids.
Edit: For a patchwerk fight what you said might be true. For any current boss, especially hard modes, you are dead wrong.

Sorry that I maligned your clique enough to warrant an ad hominem response to my point. You're right, now that you point it out, I agree. You are vastly more skilled than anyone else in this thread.
I don't do hardmode raids anymore. And that wasn't an ad hominem. Am I wrong that you've never done hardmodes while they were current?

Armor weight doesn't make much difference.
Generally speaking all DPS specs can do fairly well, but I would still say that the pure DPS classes ( Hunter, Rogue, Mage, Warlock ) tend to do slightly better in most cases.
As I've always said, play whatever you like best and don't give too much attention to detail ( when it comes to choosing a class ).

Just play the class you would prefer to play. Unless you want to raid with a set guild / raid group, ( RBG group etc ) ... & they don't need , then this question is void. You need to ask yourself will you be happy playing any class, just because of the dps out-put, if this isn't the case. Nothing worse then playing hours on end & you wish you was playing another class....
I had that issue back in Vanilla & TBC... i got stuck playing a Holy Paladin, since my raid group wouldn't let me play anything else... Today, screw that play style.. i choose what i prefer to play. If a raid group doesn't like it, then i find another one that will. Do what makes you happy, not what makes others happy.
Warning, don't take this information as anything but utter rubbish.
Clearly i shouldn't have taken the Red pill... or should i have taken the blue pill..!. Nope i took them both.
Some classes can do more DPS if they have only silk items on, since cloth can be low grade quality, while mail gear is the bee's 'knee's at keeping the animals from tearing your arms off. While plate can take damage from cannons, that fire larg cannon balls of iron & other stuff.
Can cloth outdps mail or plate?
Answer:
Cloth when wet can out-dps mail, soggy mail isn't worth the paper it is printed on. Plate, depends on if it is fine china or clay.
Well on another note:
Troll Mage is the Best DPS... since they got tusks.
Warrior is the Best, better DPS over DK's & Retro 80's paladons.. since they can Bash lots harder with two, two-handed big weapons. Since Titans of the grips abilities......
Mail, Shammoo's loads better then Hunter pew pews... since they Bigger DPS.. since they don't have to wait for the bow-string to stop.. they can pew pew punch like bam bam bam... with melee weapons. Bling bling...
