In preview, links show the (item=1111) instead of the actual item, and only the tooltip is viewable. But when they are put through, and the post, etc is submitted, the proper link shows with the icon, quality, tooltip, and coloring.
I'm not sure what problem you're having with the rest of linking, as I pulled your link directly and it works fine (and I distinctly recall being able to link to forum posts, etc before I became a volunteer editor) -

. See? You can try taking out the Wowhead part of the link so it becomes \

(linking as

), as sometimes that can fix the issue (works with Wowhead links only; non-Wowhead links still need the entire address).

For the second problem, that's because they cannot post links with \ tags yet as the privilege
"Post external links"
requires 150 reputation. It comes out raw, but the automatic parser still recognizes the http:// part and posts it as a clickable link.

The second one is indeed a question of rep:
If you instead try {url=/item=54444} with proper brackets of course, it should work as it isn't an external link (though I can't really check it out because I'm allowed to post external links.
As to the firts proble, items shometimes show up as (item=54444) after submitting, and seems to be some sort of cache issue, where the first posting on a page won'tnecessarily come through. I remember this being discussed a while back, but as I recall, no solution was found as the problem wasn't uniquely identified.
