I currently play a Shadow Priest on Stormreaver. I refresh VT about 2 seconds before it runs out giving you time to cast it. As far SW:P goes I just refresh it before it runs out usually 3 seconds before it runs out.
Shadow Priest DoT Timer
is a good addon to have to keep track of when to refresh it =D

You can no longer clip DOTs. They will always work up the full tick before refreshing/replacing.

Mostly right, but misleading. When you refresh a dot it will finish the next tick before starting the new duration. This makes the ideal time to refresh to be after the next to last tick, but before the last tick. If you refresh just before the next to last tick, that final tick of your original dot is gone forever, aka clipped.

"Clipping" is "loosing a tick". You don't loose a single tick, when you recast the spell sooner than it is necessary.
All you loose is DPS, because you could have spent the same time casting something else, that would actually add to the damage output, instead of keeping it the same.

Explaining it a bit more, if you refresh it before it finishes that final tick will be based off of your current spellpower, crit, etc. So sometimes if you clip it during a buff like right at the end of a spellpower trinket your last tick will be more powerful.
