A way to combat AH spam

Certain trolls (the Internet kind, not the Darkspear kind) have a habit of spamming the auction house with dozens of "stacks of one" of a given material. I just thought of a great way to combat this: impose a cap on the number of postings of a given material that each player can have on the AH at any given time; i.e., I can put up 8 mageweave cloth divided into 8 stacks of 1 each, or I can put up 160 mageweave cloth divided into 8 stacks of 20 each, but either way, a person looking for mageweave cloth won't see more than 8 listings from me. This cap would be separate for each material, so I could have 8 entries for copper ore, 8 entries for copper bar, 8 entries for mageweave cloth, 8 entries for Bolt of Mageweave, etc.

Wouldn't work; they'd just create alts to spam it more.

They'd have to work pretty damn hard to do that kind of @#$% (i.e. mailing to self).
I think a better potential idea is to impose an account-wide cap on auctions. As for how many...that's for everyone else to decide (maybe 100 or something?)

Nah. I'd prefer the ability to filter items by stack size (and buyout), or just group similar stacks together, like on the mobile variety.
I guess Auctionator will do for now..

"Ignore auctions by: X" would be helpful.

The problem with addons is that they still have to scroll through the auction house to get past the pages of stacks of one, which takes ages. If we could filter ingame AH by stack amount before we actually load the results it'd speed up the AH enormously.

You can easily get around this already with different addons or search methods.
A bigger AH problem is people who camp it and constantly cancel/repost. Limit the # of cancels per day or lockout on each account and it goes away.

Maybe adding the player to the ignore list could do that...or something. Seems like a plausible idea.

Not account-wide, but realm-wide could work...

That sounds fine.

I think it would have to be a heck of a lot more than that tbh. Inscription alone posts tons of seperate glyphs, darkmoon cards, inks (When its profitable to sell them.), etc. And thats one profession. Thers also numerous different cuts of gems, different enchants, etc. and when people are trying to profit off of all these a cap would be very irritating. Especially JC and inscription since they are supposed to be sold in stacks of 1. I just use auctionator, and if I see someone posting alot of stacks of 1 of herbs, I will whisper/mail them to kindly suggest they post in stacks of 20 or at least 10 to stop mailbox spam (Also offer to buy their stuff directly via CoD if the prices is good.)

Make the deposit higher each time you put out the same item more than once in the AH ( for the duration of the auctions )

It's all supply and demand. You can't really blame the system. People will do whatever they must to make sure they sell and there is really nothing wrong with that. You can use addons to get around the spam and such very easily. There is nothing wrong with it.

How about maximum posts within a certain duration?

There are a lot of low pop servers where there aren't a whole lot of sellers. If only 2-3 people are regularly making glyphs or gems and selling them, then it'll be kind of hard on the access people have to items. Also, there are a lot of items that make sense to sell in singles- certain quest items, glyphs, gems, etc.- how annoyed would you be if you couldn't get a gem you need without buying 20 of them? Or if there were never any of the glyphs you needed on the AH because they didn't sell for as much as some others, and the people making them had a strict limit.
I think that reducing the per-piece deposit when you post in a stack, though, would be a useful way to cut down on AH spam, without limiting the market. People would still be able to post as much as they want, and would still post things others need even if the profit margin isn't huge. It would make it more profitable to post things in stacks that generally will sell in stacks- like leather, cloth, enchanting dusts, but would also allow people to post singles on items that will generally only sell that way (gems, enchants, glyps).
Barring that, get Auctionator. There is a "Buy" tab which condenses the information, and rather than having a different line for each individual dust, will just have one line that says "52 stacks of 1 at this price."

Auctionator... works just fine for matters like this.
Postal.... to collect mail on one click should you purchase a stack of individual items.

You do realize that each different kind of item would be capped separately, right?

That doesn't really have anything to do with what we're talking about.

That's a whole different problem and can be solved via cross-realming the auction houses

That's an arbitery cap based on what? It is valid to sell some items in stacks of 1 as it is stacks of 20. A good example is at the beginning of expansion, enchanting dusts are sold in low number stacks but as the cost comes down and demand increases, so the stack size increases.
That doesn't really have anything to do with what we're talking about.
It kind of does. The enchanting example above, which is driven by supply/demand.

That solution doesn't exist and has no time-frame.
The main issue here seems to be "I don't like clicking 20 times instead of one". Admittedly, the default AH window is awful at displaying varying stacks of items, but if you use an auction addon you'll be amazed about how much better it can be displayed and in a better order.
A simple improvement to the AH window would a the solution where you could grab n items of x at (or below) price y in a single click.
