It doesnt duplicate anything (unless you are using the
Charred Glyph)
It literally summons everything from your cache. If you have just 1 pet in it it will summon just one.
If you have all spirit beasts in it - it will be all spirit beasts (and big heal), if you have Spirit bond, itsticks will multiply by number of pets.
If you have several different pets with several different abilities you can summon them all and benefit from these abilities (bloodlust, crit buff etc).
Yes, you should always have 5 pets to maximise stampede. Preferably with all the buffs/debuffs otherwise unaccesible or be lazy and use the mentioned glyph.

Nope. No need for a glyph. It clones if you have an empty or otherwise unusable slot (i.e. Stampede can't summon exotic pets are Survival but it's possible to have them on reserve if you have a BM off spec, so instead it clones your current pet).
I just did this on a target dummy with 4 pets (1 active, 3 on reserve).
