You need to study the particulars of the AH economy on your server; they can differ between realms and even between factions on the same realm. There is a plethora of information out there (including on this site as hymer already pointed out).

Are you worried about your venison intake?

You have two choices
1. Be creative and come up with something that people need that isn´t being supplied on the AH already
2. Make ´playing the AH´ your game.
Yes, you can use guides and add-ons to make money, you can farm leather 2 hours a day and make a ton of gold.. but at the end of the day, is that how you want to spend your time playing a game? scanning add-ons and running back and forth to the mailbox? Even if you use AH and mailbox add-ons, you are still going to spend a lot of time at the mailbox and digging through your bank.
Or you can do #1. The first week of the expansion, I had an 85 that I knew I wouldn´t be playing for awhile. So I camped him in front of a certain cave. While I leveled my main, every hour or so, I would log in on the alt, kill 1 mob, collect a BOE epic and sell it on the AH for 10k. In 3 days, I had made 100k by playing that alt about 20 minutes total.
If you are not creative, then you are going to grind.. you are going to grind leather, grind the mailbox or grind your AH add-ons.
Thank you have to ask.. what am I going to spend the gold on? Probably the answer right now is the JC mounts. I believe it is infinitely more fun to level an alt with that profession and make it yourself than to grind the AH. Plus, you now have that profession for future expacs and you can make a profit selling those mounts to all the people who are grinding the AH selling 100,000 glyphs for 1 silver less than the competition.
The real problem with guides, and advice like above is that they are stagnant, and don´t take advantage of timely opportunities. Instead of having someone tell you to find an ore seller, cut gems, sell gems, make jewelry, send jewelry to alt, disenchant jewelery, sell enchanting mats.. you should be thinking.. hm.. LFR opens up this week, what is going to change because of that? PVP season started last week, what changed because of that. It is the first week of an expansion, what are people going to be looking for?

What type of items tend to sell the most i.e mats, armor or weapons!
Right now, the answer is "leather". Everyone is powerleveling their leatherworking to make epic leather gear for their level 90 kung fu pandas, and this is driving leather prices to 4-5 times what they normally are.
Second place goes to ore, bars, gems, herbs, cloth, and other raw materials.
Armor and weapons are a crapshoot, and most greens won't sell even for vendor prices.
Just want to start working the auction house to make a little more doe!
I think you mean dough.
get to level 600 in every profession, buy crap tons of ghost ore, use JC to prospect all of it for gems, use Alchemy to transmute gems into Primal Diamond, use JC to turn Primal Diamonds into jewelry, use Enchanting to disenchant the jewelry that you created...
Isn't this the kind of thing that caused the Global Financial Crisis?
Be creative and come up with something that people need that isn´t being supplied on the AH already
That too. Yesterday, I met someone in the Trade channel who was willing to pay me 800g to farm 15 stacks of Mithril ore and 15 stacks of Thorium ore because he was powerleveling his mining and BS. In addition to making a load of gold, I also picked up a bunch of gems, solid/dense stone, truesilver ore, etc. along the way, and it's all going on the AH. While I was doing that, someone bought all of the copper, bronze, iron, and steel that I had put up. I just can't keep up with demand!

I buy and sell weapons/armor/recipes to me these have been a staple in gold making since vanilla for me. on avg i can bring in 10k per 100 items posted, around 60k per day doing nothing. And auctioneer is a waste imo, ur on an "island" post ur items reasonably and ppl will buy them. I mean, where else are they going to go? I have seen auctioneer say that the best thing to do with an item was to vendor it.lmao anyone else wanna vendor Enchant shield - lesser parry? Auctioneer is only good for farming mats imo and things that are seen in the auctionhouse on a weekly basis.

I'm a miner/Jewelcrafter (600/600) and to be honest I've never made much from these professions. I understand of course that it will be entirely my fault/lack of knowledge so my genuine question is this - how do I best make a few quid out of these two professions?
I hear of people selling jewels and ore for bucks but I can never seem to sell anything reliably. Prices for gems seem to vary a fair bit and I try and post them up at a price comparable to the lowest reasonable existing auctions. I've used Auctioneer to try and get a consistent saleable price going but I so often end up with a mailbox full of "auction expired" messages. Many gems are expiring at a 1 gold pricetag and I'm left scratching my head.
Cheers in advance for any advice.
