Because Tuesdays are not the weekend, which is when the largest number of players are on.
And maintenance days have been Tuesday since Vanilla came out.

as an EU player i always assumed Blizzard released stuff on tuesday cause it was the maintance day of the US servers and they always apply each patch there first. (except expansions who are released world wide on same day)
as an EU player i generally dont mind being a day later, it allows them too track down and fix most bugs before its applied at us and makes it less incovenient for EU.

On a tangentially related subject, can you buy the xpack in stores yet? Or is the earliest time you can get a physical box at the midnight release?

I always figured that friday till monday were the days with the most ppl on, I include monday because there are a lot out there playing on EU servers not living in Europe which have a timezone difference (myself included). If a patch/maintenance is bugged they still have the other weekdays to fix it meaning the least influence on gameplay for the average gamer.

I figured most people would actually be playing during the weekend. Maybe they release it so they can clear out most small bugs before a majority of players get to it?
I was saying, Tuesday seem to be the best because it's after the player rush from Thurs to Monday.

another reason for tuesday, is, it is in the early-middle of the week, which means, Company employees are at work, and with every game release, online or offline, always has a lot of bugs the first week of release, and so having it in the early-middle of the week gives the company an opportunity to fix most of these major bugs before too many people can rage and quit the game.

Its not just WoW or Blizzard, almost all games are released on a Tuesday and I've always heard it has to with stores getting shipments in. So they get the games on Monday and sale them on Tuesday.
Not just games but movies are usually released on DVD & BR on Tuesdays as well (and books and music too, I believe.)

I'm just waiting for inevitable moment when someone puts all their stuff on a Wednesday (not counting WoW-EU).

Yes, this is most often the case. It's not just a Blizzard thing. Almost all games, movies, CD's, books etc are released on Tuesdays. I'm not sure what the significance is for that but that's just been the case for many many years.
