I does get annoying, but you have to realize that they're huntards and usually just pewpew. If they want their pet to tank something, let it. I do. The pet usually dies as a result.

Hi I'm a Hunter and I misdirect to the Healer on purpose and taunt the boss to piss off melee.
=)
I'm joking, damnit
Edit: In all seriousness, I wish they'd make it autocast off by default.

My main is a hunter, and yes, Pre-patch I never turned growl of, since it was not a taunt and only heightened threat which was enough to pull off me but not any tank worth the name. First dungeon I was in post-patch, Vortex Pinnacle, I noticed my pet was slowly dying. First I thought the Tank was just crap, then I realized that my wolf simply taunted the things off him when I happened to look at Omen for a split second. So I turned growl off and now I only turn it on if I need to tank something after the tank is dead.
However, the tooltip haven't changed. Also, if you're used to an ability doing a particular thing and it suddenly changes, you often miss it cause I doubt that people read tooltips if they think they know what an ability does.
And btw, if you were to told me L2P noob for missing that I had it on, I would desummon my wolf and put out my pocket tank, and tank the rest of the dungeon with or without your consent. How about you try to tell them nicely that growl is now an actual taunt, instead of flaming them for not knowing their class; when they actually do know just that some things changed with 5.0
So .... L2Manner, noob.

From both sides of the coin (I also tank) that's the wrong way to deal with it. Don't punish the whole group just because the tank happens to be a d**k.
In randoms you have to deal with some bloody horrible players, and it gets so hard after a while to tell the genuine mistakes from people just not bothering to learn their class or abilities.
Obviously after a patch people need to be more understanding. (It's worth noting that Prot Pallys threat gen took a reasonable hit with the last patch)
If the tank is still an ass, either bite your tongue and get on with it or drop group.
Well ... I wouldn't be punishing the rest of the group since I can actually solotank all the Cata-normals... So it would just be a switch in tanks, and the healer would probably be happy since I selfheal the pet at all times.
However, I do understand his point, but 'L2P noob' is not the correct way of making someone correct a mistake. If someone tells me 'L2P' ... Well I don't even know what he is referring too, what he considers I did wrong. If he tells me nicely 'Hey dude, your growl is on, could you turn it off?' then I have no troubles at all turning it of and answer him 'Ah, sorry I missed that'. Most people don't get bugged by my behavior.
EDIT: For the record, I also tank sometimes on a DK, but if I see someone with growl on or something else that disturbs my job, I ask them kindly not to do that. If they won't listen, I'll tell them again, third time I might not be as polite and after that I will attempt to votekick them, at least if it's something big like pulling extra mobs, taunting my targets or using Misdirect on the healer.

The way I look it, it's just like a normal DPS that gets pull happy and pulls before the tank. If you want to tank so bad, then go ahead. But be in the proper spec to do so, that way the group doesn't have to suffer because of your stupidity.
I'm geared enough to where one Thunderclap pulls aggro off even the DPS that deliberately pulled ahead of me, but I will take a notion to let them tank it as much as they want until they die and the add heads for the healer.
