My own cauterize killed me?

Just ran my first Cata dungeon on my 81 arcane mage. Leveled pretty quickly due to RAF, but still know the basics of rotation and such.
On the last boss of Throne of the Tides, after gaining size, my cauterize spell kicked in and healed me, but then killed me. My combat log clearly said (numbers are off, forgot to screenshot).
Cauterize healed 11000
Cauterize damaged 4000
Cauterize damaged 4000
Cauterize damaged 4000 (overkill)
Did I miss something and am just being stupid? Or was there something I wasn't supposed to do. That is a passive thing that happens not a spell I hit, so I couldn't stop it (as far as I know)
EDIT: I should add that my combat log said no other damage on me during that time. I understand that I gain 50% then lose 40% over time, but the numbers don't add up or something.

Cauterize is there to pretty much give your healer a few extra seconds to heal you up. If I ever see a mage use cauterize in PvP and they have no healer allies around I just walk away as I know they will more than likely die afterwards.
Actually, the new Cauterize will NOT kill you, assuming no external damage. As for the OP, I have no idea what happened? Maybe a bug with the buff gained with that fight?

Tidal Surge
is probably what caused to Cauterize to kill you.
Here's how I imagine it happened:
You gain 500% Health during the last phase of the fight. Cauterize procs during that time, takes a snapshot of your health. Brings you back up to 50% Health of your buffed health.
Over the time it takes to deals the 40% Health damage to you, you lose
Tidal Surge
and thus go back to only having a miniscule health pool compared to the 500% stronger Cauterize DoT. You die.
On the plus side, you won't have taken repair damage ^^

Mages don't "use" cauterize. It's always been a passive talent. Now if you're talking about specing into it, any viable fire spec has included it since it was introduced.

Thanks guys. I'm guessing that the scenario Archibolt suggested is something like what happened. I made sure the next time in the fight to do everything I could to not let cauterize pop while I was large so it didn't happen again.
And yeah, it is passive as Pens said, you don't "use" it.

Meh, cauterize isn't that good a talent anymore really unless you specifically play with a healer. Otherwise don't take it.

Mind elaborating why you think so?

You can use Temporal Shield to heal the damage you take from it, or Ice Barrier to block it.
And why "anymore"? It used to heal you to 40% hp and deal 48% over 4 seconds, totalling -8% hp, and now you get healed to 50% and get 40% damage, ending up at 10%.
