At low levels with my rogue, I died a lot until I learned to scheme before getting into a fight. 1 mob at a time, stealthed most of the time, and just accepting the fact you simplt could not deal with more than 1 mob at a time.
I also did my leatherworking profession and used armor patches, the mobs did not hit as hard with the extra armor, admitted that comes a little later, but if you could afford armor patches of the AH. Buff foods can help too. I do not know if sharpening stones are available, but using those can up your DPS quite a bit........ are you using your poisons? I can't remember if the new leveling scheme allows those.........
If you have some friends who could cast call of the wild, blessing of kings or other buffs, that helps too. I found a level lower mob was a lot easier to deal with on my own unbuffed, with buffs I had a chance against higher level (level+1 or 2) mobs.
also timing your 1 per second swing gets you better DPS than just spamming..........

-i really was holding out hope my stealth ability would help my cause. however my attack bar (the sinister and eviscerate options) completely disappears in stealth mode. so i have to reappear in order to have attack options available thus almost completely negating the stealth advantage. so i can run around invisible but have no confidence in attacking things. as such i have almost no money and very limited chance to get extra items like better weapons and armor.
and completeing an involved solo quest is out of the question.
This can help you out -
Start your computer. Start up WoW. Now log in. Select your rogue from the character screen. Wait for it to load. OK go somewhere safe like an inn or major city. Enter your stealth mode by hitting the stealth button. Now hit P on your keyboard. Notice this opens your spellbook. Move your mouse cursor over one of your skills that use stealth, like backstab or garrote or pickpocket (I can't remember what you have at this level and it has probably changed since I leveled a rogue in WotLK). Note that you may have to change tabs in the book or pages to find one. After locating a skill, press down on your left mouse key and hold it in. While holding it down move your mouse so the icon is over your action bar. Release the left key on mouse. Now you can use a spell while in stealth. I mean it has those little pop ups when you create your character for the first few levels so you know stuff like - You have a spell book that has your skills in it, talk to the guy with the ! do what he wants then go back. Again not 100% sure what you have at this level but don't you think the skills that say "Requires: Stealth" would be a red flag you can use them while in stealth instead of sneaking up to a guy, dropping stealth and starting out with autoattack. It gives you a different action bar for stealth because some of your skills can only be used then and some you wouldn't or shouldn't use in stealth.
Tip: Don't forget to hit P again to close the spellbook.

If you're having problems with patrols forcing 1v2 situations, you could try spamming throw at max range to pull melee mobs at you one by one, remember to use poison on the thrown weapon. This way it is less likely for adds to randomly patrol to you and force a 1v2 situation.
For dungeons, you're much better off in combat spec due to
Blade Flurry
so you can cleave the adds. This is the only form of aoe that rogues have until you get
Fan of Knives
at lvl 80. Hope this helps.

The stuff you learned by level 26 you should know by level 6.
Turn your tips back on, and read them this time.

1. The rogue has 2 different sets of abilities to learn. With different action bars for each. One set of skills u can do while stealth and another entirely different set that u can only do while visible.
2. Some moves build combo pts and some moves use these combo pts. U must know which is which and use them at the appropriate time.
3. Energy drain is a constant nuisance.
4. Also, and this is probably my biggest grip, is that some skills are very positional. In other words u MUST be behind the target to perform them. It can make for some frustration if ur target unexpectedly turns and the move ur trying to do misfires bc of it.
1. You don't have 2 sets of abilities to learn. You have a mix of abilities, some of which are only usable from stealth...ie Ambush, Sap, Garrote.
2. True. You want to get 5 combo points before using a finisher move to get the max benefit/damage from it.
3. So is mana drain, health drain, and LFR.
4. As a rogue leveling, you should be using your sap more often. This makes sure the target doesn't turn on you and gives you more than enough time to line up that ambush until you get more comfortable doing the "stealth-by shanking" that we rogues love to do so much. At later levels, when you have someone to tank for you, this is a moot point as you always want to be behind mobs when it is physically possible.
We all have that learning curve when it comes to classes....me personally, I suck at huntard pvp/pve because I overthink it.
Have fun!

You can always pull mobs with a thrown weapon from a distance. this can eliminate quite a few multi mob fights if you would otherwise approach the mob melee style

Thread in a nutshell:
"Rogues have a unique style of play and require skill to use effectively"

This is probably one of the most important topics for someone who plays WoW for pve but yet somehow it fails to get the attention it deserves. The first rogue I played was a human rogue and i remember when i was lvl 5 and a lvl 7 mage challenged my to a duel outside stormwind in goldshire. I was hesitant but i accepted and i kicked the crap out of him several times until he begged that i lose and he gets the Duelicious achievement. Rogues just overpower people in pvp even in later stages.
But to my surprise when i tried to complete quests in PvE i just got screwed by mobs. I was sure i was doing something wrong. But the truth is rogues are severely handicapped in early stages. thats why you need to be aware of all aspects of the game. go slow and pay attention to items that you may pick up from mobs that might give you an edge.
Here is what i did for lvl 1- 10. try to level cooking from wolf meat that drops from diseased wolves and not from fishing. because eating stuff like that gives you that +2 stamina and spirit bonus from Well Fed. I chose alchemy because i would collect herbs and purchase a lot of empty vials and make Elixir of Defense and Healing potions that kept me on in a fight. i would rather run away from mobs when i knew things are not going good rather than to lose the bonuses from these items. the best bet is to try to isolate mobs. the combo i would do is:
1. throwing knives(you can atleast hit 3 of these before the target reaches you)
2. 5 x sinister strikes
3. eviscerate
4. gouge
5. probably apply a healing potion/linen bandage/heavy linen bandage
6. backstab
7. then sinister strike and eviscerate as needed.
Remember to keep getting your skills updated from a rogue trainer. I remember i was level 6 and i was crushing level 10 x 1 mob/ lvl 8 x 2 mobs. just hang in there. when fighting bosses try to clear mobs around them first. make sure you are buffed by armor kits if you have leatherworking which is most preferred for rogue, or by alchemy which i prefer. good luck, have fun.
In dungeons stay close to the healer and dont use backstab or skills that generate aggro. try to queue/enter dungeons when you are lvl 20. i think you get certain skills by then which kind of make rogues the best dps class for dungeons. If you saying that i want to solo rogue in dungeon early game then you are stupid and overambitious, forget it. its not gonna happen. rogues were not made for that. better choose a warlock/hunter/feral druid/monk etc.or whatever the internet tells you to.
but its fun to play a rogue. you can really get into the game. you cant really enjoy a milkshake or a snack on the side while playing a rogue as you need both hands :D and i think thats what makes them special.
