Its that wonderful time every other summer. Where we get to watch some of the best soccer in the world. This even year is the Euro cup. While it is not host to as many countries as the world cup. It's just as exciting, and brings the same quality of soccer that the world waits for.
http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/index.html
First game starts today at 18:00 CET (12:00 EST) Poland Vs. Greece.
I'll be trying to watch as many games as I can for the next month. I won't miss a single Spain match though
GL to all the teams!!!
Cheers,
Hat

Ew no. I want England, Portugal, Poland, Sweden, France, Germany, Spain and anywhere else with a significant support base over here to get eliminated in the first round. I #$%^ing hate how loud @#$%s get when football's on. :(

Damn, we drawn against Poland (1-1 final score) :(, they were lucky enough, after they conceded they goal they pissed their selves. We scored another one but it didn't count as is it was offside,
but in fact it wasn't
. Well they were playing home so good result I guess.
Isn't that what they always say, though?
:p

Pretty unfair assessment of the game.
I'll start by saying that I have no interest in this group, and was watching the game for the awesomeness of soccer and the players the play it.
Poland was obviously energized by the 55,000 polish fans in the stands. Compared to the 4,000 fans from Greece. The Greece do what they do best, which is a large player mass behind the mid line which yields a very solid defense. I don't know what was really going through their heads though, because the team was not moving that much.
Poland tried 2 times to cross and intercept a shot in, on the 3rd time, they finally got the header.
1-0
around the 40th minute, a Greek player received his second yellow card. The first yellow card he got was a rough call, but I believe it was made because as it's an opening game the refs want to be a bit more aggressive to show that there will be no leniency. Unfortunately, 2 yellow cards mean you get a red card, and now the Greek team is playing 1 player down.
The second half starts and the Greeks seem to have rallied under the red card and have a lot more spirit in their legs. 2 shots on goal deflected, Polish goally out of position, the 3rd rebound gets a nice kick in for the equalizer.
1-1
Greeks are really moving now, and are attacking. Pass goes forward. The flag goes up for off sides. Another pass is made, and then that is shot in for the off sides goal. Looking at the tap, the first pass, for which the flag did go up, was off sides. It was a hard call, but a fair one. The flag went up early, and there was no hesitation. There really is no debate on that.
Another attack into Polish territory, 1 on 1 with the goal keeper as a long pass is falling to the attacker. The goal hesitates, and knows that he won't be able to intercept the shot, he kicks his leg out late, to the area of the ball, but by that time, he has lost his chance, and clips the leg of the Greek attacker. Red card, good call, clear and simple.
Replacement goalie comes in, and saves a grounded shot. When it comes to PK's, The shooter either makes them, or he doesn't. This low roller did not have what it takes to be a winner, and the keeper was able to get his hands on it pretty simply.
TL:DR
- It was a pretty eventful game. Even though it was a 1-1 tie, I believe that Greece came out with better position. They lost an easily replaced player for their next game, while Poland lost their primary keeper. Now the Polish team will need to use their replacement keeper against the Russians in their next match....ouch. I think the Greeks learned their lesson, and will be moving more in there next game.
Cheers,
Hat
p.s. sorry for typos, I'm actually typing this while waiting to pick up a friend. sooooo yeah, no real review.

If anybody makes monkey chants, or start throwing bananas, I want the entire team to walk off the field. Anything less would be a shameful betrayal. Even the British government, not known for their scruples, are boycotting the first few games. Why not refuse to go to any of them? Already the Dutch team have been subjected to abuse.
All this from a person who doesn't enjoy sport at all.
Also this. Didn't a player get carded for refusing to put up with the racism in a game?

That said, The Poles and Ukrainians won't really need much provocation, they really are scumbags when it comes to racism.
Irony
!

The irony was more to do with you discussing how disgusting it is that there's racism going on, and then you proceeded to make a negative racial profile yourself, which you've already clarified.

To be fair, most post-Union countries who don't have warm feelings to those times, usually let Nazism spawn among the youth. 'cough' Baltics 'cough'
I'm aware Neo-Nazism is an issue in many Eastern European countries, but I'm not then going to make any ridiculous generalisations like "all Poles are racist", because I
know
it's not true.

Just a fact to let you know that the word "nazi" comes from the german term "nazionalist" which means nationalist. Someone who supports fanatically his country.
Congratulations, Captain Obvious. That doesn't change what Nazism (capitalised) refers to, however.
