As soon as you upgrade your starter edition account with the battle chest you will play as normal and be able to level to 70. The Wrath of the Lich King expac will allow you to ger to 80 and of course Cata will bring you up to 85.

■Trial account twinks can’t visit the AH, so BoE gear has to be farmed by the twink, leaving the player at the mercy of very low drop rates.
What is AH and BoE?
AH is short for Auction House, and BoE is short for Bind on Equip, meaning once you equip the item you are no longer able to sell it to other people other then NPC vendors. Also you're unable to trade it to other people.

Thanks for that Takenobo.
I just joined up here and it seems like this is an amazing forum of helpful people!
No Problem, people here on wowhead are an amazing community and will be more helpful then not. Granted every community has one of "those" people in them but can't be helped.

Will I start at Patch 1.11 "Shadow Of The Necropolis"?
No. Game versions are not area specific. Instead they cover all updates made to the game. (Example, we are in 4.3.2 right now, so regardless of what version you are playing at and where you are at in the game, the game version is still going to be 4.3.2)
Content you can access however is tied to which version you have tied to your account. The base game you can purchase (which is Vanilla plus Burning Crusade) will allow you access to all zones in Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor, and Outland and all content pertaining to them except for certain zones (see below). All classes excluding Death Knight are available and all races excluding Goblins and Worgen (with there respective starting zones) are available. All gear will be visible to you, though only gear from 1-70 content will be usable by you.
The Wrath of the Lich King expansion on your account grants you access to Northrend and the Death Knight class which requires you to have a level 55 character on your account to create one with a further restriction of one Death Knight per server. The entire content is accessible as well as all content within it (levels, items, quests, gear, etc)
The Cataclysm expansion unlocks the Goblin and Worgen races and grants access to all content in Mount Hyjal, Vashj'ir Deepholm, Uldum, and Twilight Highlands. While three zones (Hyjal, Uldum, and TH) can be accessed prior to having the expansion, you will be unable to attain any content in those areas without the expansion on your account. Quests, gear, items and levels are still blocked off from you unless you have the expansion tied to your account.
There's no requirement to be caught up on expansions before you play however So unless you want to play as a goblin/worgen to start, then you can hold back on the expansions until level 55 at the earliest if you want a death knight. Otherwise waiting until level 70 will work just as well.

One other suggestion.
Depending on both what your financial situation is, and what you would like to do in the game, you could hold off on buying anything except the Classic / Burning Crusade battle chest until the new expansion comes out (probably 4-6 months out, maybe a little sooner). The reason to wait is, Blizzard has, for the last couple expansions, offered some great deals on the previous expansions to help new players get "caught up" to the current game.
So if you can wait, you could save yourself about 60 dollars or more. As was said, you still have access to much, much more than what you get with a trial account. The biggest thing you would be missing out on is end game raiding....but right now, that is pretty dead anyway.

Thanks Magician22773. My wife is out buying me the warchest right now. I think its a good idea to wait for anything else beyond that.
You sir, have an awesome wife. When I started WoW, I had to sneak off to buy my expacs and get them installed. LOL

itascagasman,
Yeah she's awesome.... I even got her playing too. I downloaded it onto her laptop a few weeks ago. She got a battle chest as well.
Get prepared to have 2 addicted (worse than any other drug) WoW players in your family.

Helps to have two, actually. The thing about WoW players is that we can still see other people's shortcomings. In fact, we thrive on them. They will hopefully counter-balance one another :)
LOLJK you're never coming off of it.

I'm at Level 15 now and she's still at 3. I'm loving it and she's kind of bitter that I didn't get as into Diablo III with her. Its her all time favorite game and I was kind of 'meh' with it.
What server have you made your home on? Perhaps there are friends in your future.
