Ranged DPS almost always out perform Melee DPS on boss fights. Right now it comes down to the boss and how their fight works. It also depends on the player. If you rather do Range DPS instead of Melee, then you'll probably do better as Range.
Since you just started, it may be better to try out Ele first. The priority list is smaller and probably easier to master. Of course Enh isn't that far behind. Also, since you're leveling just try to level as both specs. It won't be until you're later that you should try to heal some dungeons, unless you get a geared tank to run normals with you. Even then, just go as a DPS spec and get easy loot.
Also right now, all the specs seem to be really close in terms of actual DPS output. According to
this
, Ele is doing 2k DPS more than Enh. But overall the difference between the top and bottom of all specs is only 8k DPS. And this is with the best gear on Patchwork style fight.
And to stick with the whole 'Ranged DPS almost always out perform Melee DPS on boss fights' idea, all the top DPS are mainly ranged. The only exceptions are Rogues, who just got those Legendary daggers, and Arms Warriors.

My Shaman is made for healing, but of course i wanted to do some questing for money and items etc.. Not having any trouble with Ele, and dungeons im always top 3 with respectable dps.
It did take getting some gear after hitting 80, but now its fun!

I sure hope you're top 3 dps in 5-man dungeons. Otherwise you're doing something wrong, or that tank/healer is really good.

Haha, I get what you're saying and thought it myself for a second, but the truth is that while you're leveling, most Tanks are top DPS trash and boss. Bosses are closer, depending on the class and player, but unilke endgame, Tanks are top DPS 15-80 easily.
As for the topic itself, I'm currently leveling a Shaman myself. Due to the same gear, I decided to go Elemental and start my first healer. I DPS only for the first few years I played, mostly Warlock, and raised 3 Tanks, Paly/DK to 85 Heroics and a Bear who is currently 82. I got Healium for healing so far and it's fun (mid-forties). As for Elemental, I like it, but it feels like it's missing something for me. Enemies are right on you. It doesn't have the snare that Mages have or the pet from Warlocks. It's kind of the same reason I don't like Moonkins. In dungeons they're awesome (definitely better numbers than I remember my Enhancement shaman doing at the same levels) but they definitely have some mana issues.
Leveling was definitely easier as Enhancement, but Elemental has better DPS. And if you're going to be level 80 anyway, then I don't much see it being an issue. Elemental DPS is just better than Enhancement, especially considering the spell priority and how many skills get used. Enhancement is more "fun" to me, but just doesn't pull the numbers Ele does. So it's a trade off. More damage, but little more boring.
