Lower level item prices....

So, I quit a few months ago (general boredom), but decided to jump back into the game to play a tank for the first time. I left right around the same time that transmog hit. So now I am leveling this warrior and I decide to look for a couple of upgrades on the AH, but lo and behold...the prices are INSANE! Not just popular items, mind you, basically any items (green or blue) that actually have useful stats (like leather "of the monkey" items or Str/Sta mail items.)
Last I checked, twinking hasn't made much of a comeback, and most of those items are not transmog pieces. Now I remember these were items you might pay 5-10 gold for... maybe on some "twinkish" pieces 25-50 gold... but they are selling for 500, 1000, sometimes more than that! Not just a few items from one select seller either... we are talking about everything! This is on horde-side Bonechewer (US). Is this happening everywhere?

near nonexistant supply because few bothers putting low level items up
minimal market because few bother buying, leading to even less people putting items up and less relisting
high level characters buying low level gear for transmogrification, some pieces are
very
sought after
people putting up items outside "well known" transmogrification item sets because someone might want it for the same purpose anyway
people putting items up for high prices without having a clue about transmogrification because all the other items "seems expensive"

The good news is that you can sell your unneeded items at the same ´insane´ price as you have to buy items you don´t really need.
Rule of thumb. Never buy gear from the AH until you hit level cap. Gear gets outleveled way too quickly.
If you are tanking while leveling.. good luck if you don´t have heirlooms. (unless you are with friends). I would not wish that burden on anyone. It is almost impossible for people with heirlooms to not pull aggro while leveling if the tank is in green gear.

I'm in full tank heirlooms, I was just bored and figured I'd get some off pieces (like boots which refused to fall for me in dungeon runs early on). I am far from gold hungry, so I don't mind blowing a couple hundred while leveling on assorted pieces or cheap gems/enchants. I might try and sell a few pieces as I get them, but for the most part I just throw any greens I get into the guild bank. I don't know anyone in the guild (just asked for a lvl 25 guild to pls invite me for the perks when I first made the toon on trade). So I figure I would pay for the xp/rep/honor bonuses by tossing useful drops in the guild bank.

Don't forget that if a low-level item is priced too low, it can create an advantage to an enchanter, depending on your server's current economy, of course.
Sometimes that is why these green items are priced so highly, because they are being priced to the potential enchanting mats.

I get that, but unless lvl 30 greens are dropping multiple chaos orbs I don't think their materials price should be in the 4 digit range.

How can you be so sure those items are not transmog items? You'd be surprised the kind of gold I have made in the last few months off of seemingly random lowbie items. I have about 5-6 of each armor type sets at least, always listed on the AH, many of them sell in the thousands, even more sell in the 99-999g range. I have made upwards of 50000g off a single piece of green gear.

Would liked to seen a SS of this because I personally find it hard to believe. Almost seems like shenanigans to be honest. 50k for a single green is well to be honest....i cant say the word on the forums.

It's true; if you have one of the rarer Transmog greens, you can set your own price for it; those things are a gold mine.

The most I've seen for a complete set is 28kg. Lower level greens that are random world drops. It's ridiculous.
The most I spent on my transmog set was 1k. I hardly play the spec I did transmog so I didn't see spending too much on it.
Back to the OP, buying gear off the AH while leveling is a waste of gold. You're better off getting the gear questing or doing dungeons. Even lvling professions gets to be expensive, which is a good reason to lvl them while you lvl your toon, plus chances are you'll be able to make your own gear (if you're a BS, that is)
I neglected to lvl my tailoring/enchanting on my priest, and I spent 5k on mats between the lvls of 175-250 per profession. I regret every single bit, since I could have easily farmed those mats on my own :(

You don't have to believe me and no I don't screenshot this stuff. But you can easily check on the Undermine Journal for things like Glorious Legplates and see how much those are selling across different servers. You can also check my server (Area 52 US) and see the last time they were sold was for 50k gold a few weeks ago. So yeah, you can call BS on me all you want, doesn't change the fact that this happens more often than you think.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##sas148##DELIM##

I make really good money off of low level everything- a lot of people who are leveling right now are leveling alts, and have mains with gold to spend. You can get 500g a stack for silver or on my server, 700g a stack for truesilver, 45g a pop for huge emeralds, etc. Certain low level dusts will go 300 a stack too. It's about scarcity.
Generally, I wouldn't buy anything from the AH for leveling- it's too easy to outlevel. But a lot of people do buy there.
If the prices on your server are extreme, you're going to have to make use of the AH to make money of the same types of items so you can buy what you need. If you give away everything, then there's not going to be any way you can afford your economy.

While I still played WoW I spent more gold on characters I lvled than my end game characters.
True Story.

I know on my server the prices of general low level greens(not transmog stuff) is kept high depending on what dust/shards you get from disenchanting them.Alot of the BiS enchants for heirlooms require original vanilla mats,so what looks like a half decent piece of gear to get you through 4-5 levels,to an enchanter that piece of gear could represent the mats for a 3-4k enchant
