Developer Blog -- Month of March 2012

I wanted to do a little dev blog hopefully at the end of each month where the community could see some of our projects over the past few weeks. As a warning: a lot of projects remain under wraps, like our MoP features or other new properties, but these are the ones I can share with you guys =)
Feel free to leave suggestions or feedback here. I can't promise we'll do every change people suggest, but I can promise we will read it and think about it for next month!
Wowhead News
Pretty much from day one of this launch, the community was divided on WHN. Make no mistake, I love working on Wowhead News and the whole content team has a blast creating breaking news features.
But what I
don't
love is the layout. And, from looking at feedback over the past year, an overwhelming majority of you don't like it either.
So we have Lilith, our graphic designer, working on making a new layout that's back in Wowhead's style completely. It will also be available from wowhead.com/news, meaning your cookies and cache should behave a lot better than visiting a separate domain. This should fix errors like loading times being exorbitantly high, being logged out frequently, and the general break in appearance from Wowhead's typical formula.
We are hoping to have this by the end of April, if not sooner.
Model Viewer
Alayton has been working on an update for our 3D modelviewer for our database. This should be a huge quality of life change, both in load times and amount of bugs reduced. The models should also look a lot prettier. We are hoping to get this within the next week or so, barring delays.
Guide Changes
This was on our list to do and was being worked on before we switched developers.
In short, we do plan to make organization of the guides as well as creating the guides much better and easier to use. It's just TBA and definitely not happening during April, but I wanted you to know we
want
to work on this--we just don't have the time right now with MoP.

So last week we killed VtD. It's been about a week into our new system which Spiffy and I designed, and we'd like to know what you guys think!
In short, you can mark comments out of date as a user--they become out of date and turn yellow then, signifying archival, instead of deletion. Comments with more than -5 downvotes and deleted comments are collapsed, so they don't take up space. We also removed reputation loss for downvotes, so people can't be trolled unfairly.
Mists of Pandaria Talent Calculator
Our devs spent a lot of time updating the
Mists of Pandaria talent calculator
. We were the first site to get a talent calc up for monks =)
Updated Transmog Sets
The content team does the entire transmog sets feature nowadays and it takes a lot of time to add updates--especially when there's a lot of other things to do. But we're going to be adding in suggestions people have given as well as update the "Similar Model" tab to have greater accuracy with helmets, weapons, and so on. This should be in April, along with some quest and data fixes.
We are still looking into having both genders and more races available in the gender previewer--but again, that's not for April.

That's all folks! I'm sure there's a lot of stuff I forgot--and I know for a fact there are several things I wish I could share but can't quite yet ;) But hopefully this gives you an idea of what our team has been up to!(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##SpiffyJr##DELIM##

this is a really great idea, ashelia. thanks for taking the time to share this info with the community! you guys have been doing a super job in keeping up with all the new MoP content coming out especially given all the other stuff you seem to be working on at the same time.

Thanks Ashelia, this type info is always nice to see. even though some of these are not high on my want list, I know, as you and the rest of the staff has said repeatedly, that there are different things going on in the background that we ,the users, are waiting to see.

You can always share with us your want list as well and I can vaguely let you know if we're working on it ;)

This is brilliant. I absolutely love these kinds of things. Dev talks, behind the scenes stuff etc. Go, Wowhead!

You say
In short, you can mark comments out of date as a user--they become out of date and turn yellow then, signifying archival, instead of deletion.
Doe sthat mean that I, as a user, can mark my own comments as out of date, so it doesn't have to be hard deleted just because it is old?

You forgot to mention
"Developer Blog"
as something done in March. Like a couple of users have said already, people have asked for this before, and they love to see whats going on behind the scenes of Wowhead.
From a moderator view point, I can tell you guys that Ashelia is really holding some of the greatest stuff back. Keep your eyes open. Things are coming!

I believe the system in place right now is that it takes 3 users flagging something as out of date for it to come to our attention. Maybe Spiffy can work some code magic so that if a user flags his own comment it will come right to us and we can yellow it to give it some protection.
Cheers,

I'm not sure I particularly care for the new VtD, but I'll roll with it.

So, what happened to
Clean-up Legend
achievement? I already have it, but i wanted to know.
Thanks!

Thanks for making this thread, this is basically what I and others have asked for about a Developers Blog, very nice! :)
Also, just an FYI... if Reputation Losses have been removed, the Website Reputation graph still shows the Reputation Loss section.
Oh, and the Achievements page hasn't removed the now unobtainable achievements or added the new ones that I believe you brought up recently.

You get to keep it, it just can't be earned anymore by anyone else.

Yeah that needs to be updated--we rushed VtD because of MoP, so it will be updated by the end of the week.

Not quite--it will be earnable again, if you nominate out of date comments and mods act on them =) Again probably Friday.

Oh? My mistake, lol. Thanks for clarifying. Could have sworn I read it was going to be removed.

I approve of the idea.
On the topic of guide organization, please tell me separating out 'classes' is high on that particular to-do list? I remember someone mentioning that would be addressed at some point and I've been waiting to see it done. Not that this is the most important thing to do on the site, but it seems like a no-brainer at this point.

Two things that were highlights for me:

Thank you so much. I definitely agree. Copy my blog layout imo =).

Thank you so much for this slew of changes. I was actually wondering if purging would make a comeback...

I guess I'm the only one who actually liked Wowhead News layout and style. Was a big fan of it. I agree, it doesn't entirely match the current site layout nor does it always stay logged in properly, but I do like how it looks.

Yeah, it just had too many bugs and people would visit it once then stop using it. Never really reached its potential. I think it's a fine layout...for a blog not branded as part of Wowhead. Once it's part of Wowhead, you expect a certain layout.

So I just noticed there's no way to delete one's own comments. Will this be coming back, or am I just not looking in the right place?
Also: The edit button (on both DB comments and forum posts) appears no longer to be a toggle... it keeps popping up additional edit boxes ad infinitum if you click on it more than once.
You can mark them as out of date, but that's it.
And also, indeed it does, and it also doesn't let you shut them. You have to navigate away from the page.
