Hello
Did Beth10 the other day, I thought spirit link totem would be useful when she came down
In 3 seconds we wiped
So can you guys tell me when and where to use my spirit link totem? ATM it just feels like a weird gimmick that makes things harder.
But I'd be very happy to learn if it's a useful thing or not
Cheers

I just pop it when too many people take damage and its almost unhealable.
I bomb tank with tidal waved GHW while its up (in 5m).
Spirit link is more of a damage reduction ability than healing. When she comes down you should use Tranq or something. Save Spirit link for last 10% or so.

It can also be used when anyone (esp tanks) are almost destroyed by a hit or series of hits and you or more players are close by with nearly full health. I think the HP balancing portion of the spell is the more powerful part but it's much more difficult/situational to take full advantage of.

The original ability* used to serve this purpouse, but Blizzard stole it and ripped it apart so they dont get any copyrights issues.

Ok, Resto is my offspec, and I used to only use it to get faster queues in 5 mans. I'm sufficiently overgeared, and the content is easy enough that they're no stress to heal. So, I'm not ashamed to admit I don't really know how Spirit Link works. Unfortunately my current guild is short on healers, and I'm often pressed into service as the 3rd healer in raids *grumble*. As such, it's probably about time I learned something about it.
Here's a contrived example:
Me (120K max health) + Tank (180K max health) walk into our own private 10 yard circle where he starts getting beat on. Eventually, we get to the point where (after a Riptide, so TW is up), the tank is at 1% health, whereas I'm still comfortable at 99% health.
I drop Spirit Link. This, in theory rebalances our health to 50% each (I now have 60/120, and he's at 90/180) ... right?
Ok, I am just about to cast a GHW, which for our purposes will land for 60K ... who do I cast it on? What will be the result?
Thanks guys.
In your case you would want to cast a heal on the person with the lowest maximum HP. Doing so will maximize the HP% increase for the same # amount healed.

I dont think it works this way guys. It basically gets total health pool of affected players and rebalances it so players have equal percentage. You cant gain anything by healing specific player and certainly his max hp doesnt matter. The pool is HP based not percentage based. I think it was explained somewhere already.
In the example: You start at 119k hp, tank at 18k. Health pool is 137k. Thats 46% of your shared max health pool (120+180=300). So you will both end up at 46% (you at 55.2k, him at 82.8k).
Only way you can gain anything by healing certain player is to bomb the tank as he got prolly healing received bonuses (warr, pala) and earth shield up.

Spirit Link
Totem
adjusts HP based on %. Healing a player with the lowest maximum HP means that the same heal will increase that player's HP% more than someone with more maximum HP, like a tank.
Player A has 130k max HP
Player B has 180k max HP
A 30k heal is 23.08% of Player A's HP, but only 16.67% of Player B's HP.
Hitting Player B with the 30k heal will increase A and B's HP by 8.33% each, after redistributing HP. Hitting Player A with a 30k heal will increase A and B's HP by 12.59% each, after redistributing HP.
For the WC3 link,
here ya go.

Still doesnt balance life. It only balances damage. Its a beta wotlk version of the ability. Seen it in action on those Project Lore movies.
Here
they talk about it, they used it further in the video.
Spirit Link adjusts HP based on %.
Any link to back that up? I am fairly sure i read somewhere an explanation that was consitent with my version.

I see what you did there. ;)
Also, I got the idea that it worked how you described it as well. That is: total health pool is divided up to all people affected by the totem, so that they have the same percentage-wise healthpool afterwards.
Numberwise, everyone would recieve the same healing, no matter who was healed (excluding potential healing taken bonuses, I guess). The only real direct benefit I can imagine from healing a person with the largest pool, would be that he has a potential lesser chance of suffering from overhealing, meaning that potentially more health is distributed. This is also why Chain Heal is so damn awesome alongside the totem.
... now I just hope that I didn't get it wrong either.

Are you talking about the WCIII version or the WoW Cata version of it? The mechanics I'm discussing are for the WoW version. Spirit Link using player HP% is
in the tooltip
.
Summons a Spirit Link Totem with 5 health at the feet of the caster. The totem reduces damage taken by all party and raid members within 10 yards by 10%. Every 1 sec, the health of all affected players is redistributed,
such that each player ends up with the same percentage of their maximum health.
Lasts 6 sec.
Gnub brings up a good point, most tanks have healing received modifiers and Earth Shield increases healing done to that target by 18% so you'll have to account for that.
Edit: I've modified my original post to clarify Spirit Link vs Spirit Link Totem.

Wow version, WC3 version/beta version has nothing to do with current one.
Health of each player is redistributed.... Health is redistributed. Health. Redistributed.*
So that each player ends up with the same percentage of health. Ends up with same percentage.
Ends up with
.
Not a word on what its based at. Actually a word redistributed has some economic meaning.
* redistribution - individuals pay up to a common, central source and a source divides it by chosen individuals. It doesnt add up to the pool or substract from it - depending on the situation. Like taxes. Taxes dont multiply in the process - your solution involves such. Also taxes dont shrink in the process - at least in theory.
I am fairly sure i read the tooltip right and its exactly what i am saying. It gets the current HP of a raid and accordingly to the fraction of a max HP of a raid it is it distrubutes it evenly among the raiders.
Some dude on EJ explains it properly with some math.
Gnub seems to agree with this as well. Or am i wrong?
Gnub brings up a good point, most tanks have healing received modifiers and Earth Shield increases healing done to that target by 18% so you'll have to account for that.
Its the point i brought first, kinda? Not Gnub?

Very true, I didn't realize you also wrote the line below:

So yeah, we completely agree here. Again, Chain Healing (+Riptide) ftw. Healing the tank would give all the benefits there is.
