Help me make a UI

During WotLK I experimented a lot with my UI, to a point where I was semi-satisfied with it but because I built it up from nothing and it was an experimental process its far from perfect.
Now post 4.0.1 it fell apart, like most of yours I imagine, and I am trying to get a fresh start but I am not sure what to do.
I want it to be tailored to affliction warlock (both pvp and pve), since that is what I will be focusing on in Cata. There are some preferences I have, but I don’t want to restrict creative advice with it so I will add those later.
One major problem I have is balancing information against keeping you screen clean, and in particular the space around my character. That is where my focus is, so my natural reaction is to place information there, but that leads to clutter at the point where it is most vital to be able to see.
Ps. Also I have bad experiences using pre-built addon-packages, even if I copy the WTF folder right it always seems to be messed up. So if you want to refer to such a package, explain the package instead of just linking to it and telling me I should use it.

the vast majority of the addons i used in 3.3.5 have been updated to at least be stable in 4.0.1.
the few that haven't yet i've been bale to find reasonable replacements. for the most part my UI looks the same as before and almost functions the same.
i wonder if a better strategy might be to list the addons that are giving you trouble and maybe people will be able to suggest replacements/fixes

hi asa^^
yes, most of the addons, every new expansion tend to go boom, so you have a couple of choices...
- wait until your favorite addons are updated
- try new working addons so maybe you will find better ones
in any case, you need to reconfigure most of the UI since old profiles probably won't be compatible with new versions of the addons (apart from MSBT, it worked and dunno how).

I guess my point wasn’t entirely clear. It is not that I can’t rebuild my ui to the way it was before 4.0.1 if I wanted to. It is more that I want to rethink what I have based on input from wowhead users, about how theirs look and why they decided to make their ui’s the way they did.
And maybe adress the point of dealing with information versus a clean screen.

oooh got the point^^ anyway a screen would have helped.
as for me, i have reached my maximum when i discovered tukui. yeah it's becoming the new xperl, but for me it's perfect because:
- i like lua coding, can understand it, but i'm nowhere skilled. editing anyway is at my reach, and everyday i learn something new that can improve my work.
- i want to use less memory possible, so again tukui has pretty everything built in (apart from sct, timers and a boss mod - not sure about the first 2 anyway, probably i didn't digged deep enough).
- design is really good and if someone has the skills can do pretty good work.
i'm trying to reach the point that i can code my addons myself, but it's a far one. for now, i'm happy with it.
last but not least, a good UI will provide all the useful information AND leave your screen clean. if you browse the UI thread, you will find many examples.

i will continue on Coldkils train of thought here.
i also use tukui and am completely in love with it. some people may avoid it because they think skills in .lua editing are necessary, but while a basic grasp of it is handy, its not needed.
like you say yourself, its all about the balance of functionality/information versus overview or screen real-estate. I favor the heavily minimalistic, and i do believe many people exaggerate the need for information on the screen. with that said, im not a serious raider and can treat myself to the luxury of keeping addons and stuff pretty slight. For pvp, im convinced that tukui does a great job, since its layout tends to focus unitframes in the bottom middle which ought to be good for your reactive abilities.
best of all, its so coherent and beautiful graphically speaking, and for the most part you can add whatever addons you see fit without any trouble. so if you wanna recreate your UI, tukui is my recommendation. you get a threat meter built in, gladius-style arena frames if you desire, all-in one bags, great looking action bars, nice thin frames to show important data text and many more nice built in functions. and as coldkil says, with very little memory use.
there are different tukui-compilations made by skilled people if you dont want the pure original. at the moment i use
Elv's edit
:
http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info17749-ElvsUI.html
which works great and has loads of ingame configurations through the /tukui command.
good luck whatever you choose =)

If I for example wanted my and my enemies health bar in tukui a bit higher (closer to my char) how would I do that? Also I would like 3 action bars. One on 90% transparency until mouseover-ed.
I tried tukui before, but my inability to customize it made me drop it.

all unit frames in tukui unlocks and are movable through the command /uf.
if you want 3 action bars at
bottom
it takes some configuring, yes. On the right hand side however, you can keep from 0-3 bars, visible or only on mouseover. but you could just disable tukui's action bars through the ingame options and instead use for ex. bartender.
