Now that WotLK is near the end, would you say that it was a success or a failure in comparison to TBC? Why? To what degree? Could it be rated on a sliding scale of success/failure? What has this expansion taught Blizzard? Do you foresee the Cata improving or declining?

Speaking as "the raid guy" I suppose I'm obligated to offer my opinion about the expansion raid difficulty change, which will raise back the bar for Cataclysm.
I welcome the change.

It's difficult to answer your question, because really it's a subjective topic.
However, I think YJ hit pretty close to my opinion: In the area of raiding, it over-corrected some flaws in its attempts to improve itself.
In regards to mechanics, I think that stats started getting far too convoluted and murky, and hopefully Cata will pare back on that some.
I enjoyed playing WotLK - and I'm sure that I'll enjoy Cataclysm, and the expansion beyond it, and the one after that.

WoTLK is boringly easy. Everything is fixed.
All I need is way more loot = more dungeon bosses! Not all this wierd rep grinding, item collecting, emblem gearing. I just dinged a DK 80 and got pre-raid BiS in ~8 days (real life time), 2 of which I didnt play. Missing a trinket, but have the gold to buy Darkmoon Card: Greatness if I wanted.
More dungeon bosses, with some cool abilities that could one-shot your party if not handled correctly. I need a challenge and way more loot so everyone doesnt look the same. Something that seperates the bad people from the good. Make it hard to obtain gear, so gear is not mandatory, but skill is.
New talents brings some nice to cuztomization, but in the end there'll be a spec you have to choose.
But I cant stop playing anyway. I just play it my way.

I think I understand what you are saying...
There were plenty of bosses in WotLK. There were just three problems, you either skipped the skippable ones, didn't do their raids anymore, or just needed the emblems because you didn't need that content's gear anymore.
In TBC, you usually did normals for rep/gear for Heroics, then you did Heroics for gear to enter Kara, then progressed up to Sunwell if you were skilled/lucky from there.
At Wrath launch, you did Heroics to gear for Naxx, did Naxx to get geared for Ulduar, did Ulduar to get gear for ToC, then you could do Heroics to get gear for ICC. That last step is what is seen as the main flaw in WotLK progression.

You mean someone who joined in April 2010, which strangely enough was the
same time
that the infamous "the mount guy" post occurred?

I enjoyed raiding in
TBC
. It was challenging and fun, but one of the major flaws with that expansion was the lack of Illidan's presence until you got about halfway through questing in Shadowmoon Valley. I mean he was supposed to be this über intimidating baddie but you barely even saw him. Doom Lord Kazzak had more of a presence in that expansion.
I liked the way that raids ended up in
Wrath
and I liked that they slowly added the ICC buff over the span of months so that the "elitist" and "hardcores" could still get their realm first kills and most of the scrubby guilds had to wait until 30% came out. It was just nice that they opened the content up so that more people could see it.
In
Vanilla
, and to some extent
TBC
, the endgame raids were only seen by a very small percentage of the player base. Millions of people itching to see the content just plain couldn't because it was too hard. At least in
Wrath
more people got to see the story unfold that they'd been waiting to see for so many years (personally, I was looking forward to killing the Lich King as soon as I finished
Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne
), and it was very satisfying.
Wintergrasp was a fantastic idea and it looks like Tol Barad will be even better. With the promise of
Cataclysm
content being much more difficult, and the re-emerging emphasis on crowd control, it's shaping up to be the best of all the expansions.
