I'm not
so
enthusiastic about this.. Why did they spend all of Wrath catering to the casuals if they were going to turn around and make it take months to get into a raid again? I can see people spending 3/4 of Cata doing the Grim Batol raid just like Kara in TBC already..
Because they won't. They're bringing some things back from TBC (Crowd control, etc.) but keeping some things from Wrath (emblem system, rerolled into a point system, etc.)
Emblem system, no. They are simply updating and upgrading the Badge of Justice system.
The point system is much more similar to the current emblem system. The old Badge of Justice system used the exact same currency type regardless of where you got it from and what you were purchasing. The main difference between the point and emblem system is that while the emblem system (at least post-ToC) had 2 effective currency types while the point system has 2 actual currency types.

I hope you don't have to be exalted to get tabards with Cata factions, like in BC.
and faction tabards should still give rep in heroics. >:o
They probably wont. And it's easy to get faction rep; you can get exalted before 40 after all.

Hard does not equal long :P
That's what she said.
But seriously, i like the length of most northrend instances, so i think that should be about the same. Remember the days of Wailing Caverns, BRD, and Maraudon? TBC's weren't too bad in length. I like the bringing back of CC, interrupts, less AoE tanking. There will be a growth period for people to learn the new ones and get geared, then they won't take as long anyway.

this is good and bad, id like to see it where it takes 30 minutes for an instance, often many people dont have 40+ minutes to attempt things like raids but once or twice a week, making 3-4 heroics into the time of a raid is pushing making the game rediculous. i like the fact its not instant gratification for people though, so often now people either leave if they get thier item from a raid or qq and leave becuase they dont know what they are doing and wipe the raid.
the way cata is working though, you must remember, is that guild play is going to be something of a necesity. my guild competent for the most part so once we have some gear we will be pushing for the fastest times we can

After grinding the same dungeons over and over again in the hundreds (I have six 80's) for rep, drops, and tier after tier of tokens, I want my dungeons to be short and sweet. I cannot fathom why anyone would want to do the same dungeons repeatedly when they will take forever to finish. Remember Culling of Stratholme? Yeah, hearing Arthas yammer on was cool at first, but after doing the dungeon 10 times, you want to skip it. Also, the pageantry in ToC.
I look at this from the other side.
I will like it if I can actually get something from dungeons, instead of having to do over 10 per day to get emblems for gear. As soon as I start doing instances for emblems and stop caring which is it, it will get annoying.

Make the dungeon longer and more difficult, but more rewarding. 2-3 points for the last boss? More drops? Just make the time investment worth it. Maybe it's just because I didn't do a lot of PvE in BC, but whenever I got even a good piece of blue gear, I was ecstatic, though I hardly expected to walk out of a dungeon with drops.
However, that may be the effect of the emblem grind at play, it's hard for me to say. Either way, if Cataclysm brings that feeling back, I'll be happy.

For those that hate the idea of grinding CC-required heroics, then maybe Blizzard should bring back raid progression. That way, you only run heroics to be geared for the first raid and rarely look back to heroics (expect for dailies and grinding rep/profession drops) after that raid.
In TBC, after KZ, you didn't grind heroics. You did gruul, ZA (first few bosses), Mag, SCC for gear.
Personally, I like raid progression. But that is not likely to come back.

I doubt the same strict progression will be back, but I don't think heroics are going to be quite as obsolete (nor lower raids) since there won't be such an inflation of item level. Current, there's almost no point (barring a few awesome trinkets or the like) in running Ulduar, because you get better items from badges and ICC heroics. I imagine that at this stage in the Cataclysm game, we won't be getting heroic drops equal to/better than anything but the lowest raid drops, so running the equivalent of Ulduar, even for fun, can have purpose and benefit.
Forced progression no, but at least the content stays relevant.

Lets take a real world look at this for a minute. How long you think hard mode is going to last? I give it to the first patch past Cata release when blizzard starts loosing money from causle players dropping accounts. So enjoy the 2 months you have hard mode back becuase it won't last
Since when does casual player mean bad player?

It's exactly this reason above all else I'm personally looking forward to it so much. Within the first couple months, if things continue on the path they're going, it will mean a rapid decline in the population of impatient casuals that are SO casual they can't be bothered to even be logged into the game for more than an hour or two at a time, among other things. I mean really, if you have SO little amount of time to ever play, why bother? It's a MMORPG. RPG's in and of themselves generally take a long time to complete. The MMO aspect only compounds that. Don't bother playing what you don't have the time to play properly, if all you're going to do is complain and whine about the thing because you can't get your instant gratification, when the game wasn't supposed to be designed to support that type of play style from the start.
Also I'm looking forward to the weeding out of all the baddies at end game. If they keep their current projected model, and it's anything like I'm thinking it will be, then people will have to...wait for it...../gasp!.....LEARN THEIR CLASS!
That's right, they might have to actually learn the mechanics of the class they chose to play, and how to make those mechanics work with the mechanics of other classes, to succeed. I know, I know, people should just be able to press a couple buttons and wtfpwn everything they come into contact with without the slightest effort, right?
Seriously, this is exactly
what the game needs right now, is a way to either get rid of so many of these awful players
who want their instant gratification and can't be bothered to learn anything about the game they're playing, or a way to force those players to actually learn how to play their class, learn how to use the abilities given to them, and, above all, learn some #!$DAMNED patience.
/rant
The bold bit is exactly why the hard version won't last: just to bring the conversation back to reality for a brief moment, as Theela said, Blizzard is a business, not a hobby. Businesses do not exist to "get rid of" their customers.
Cataclysm can be the best gaming experience in the world, but if it doesn't attract paying customers, it's (guess what?) a failure.
Remember, tier gear (or equivalent) will still be bought with"badges" that you can get by running heroics, and heroic instances are going to be trivial once the party has a high enough gear level.

I have no problem with every dungeon being HARD.
But for the love of Grom, please keep them somewhat SHORT. Spending an hour or more in TOK as a level ~70 was irritating as hell.
