Leaving a guild gracefully

I've been in three guilds before my current: I left my first guild right at the launch of Wrath because they were horrible raid leaders1; I was the GL of my second guild before I took a hiatus at the same time as another officer and everyone left; and I joined my previous guild right before they took a raiding hiatus before mass-app'ing to another guild.
Guild 1: I think I said something along the lines of it not working for me.
Guild 3: I just left.
If you feel you are a central member of the guild, explain yourself tactfully. If you feel they couldn't care less about you, just leave.
1 We were clearing Kara, excluding Nightbane and Netherspite, in 7 hour single runs, keeping only 4 or 5 raiders in the group each week. We didn't usually wipe, but the constant rotating raiders lead to needing constant boss explanations. I don't think we every truly had Prince on farm.

Honestly, unless it's made up of a buch of IRL friends, just /gquit. You're leaving the realm so it really wont matter. It's not like you're leaving the guild to join another guild on the same realm. Just please tell me you're not xfering to Area52? They have a lot of people do that, xfer there to get a pugged LK kill, then xfer back off :P

No, I'm going to Turalyon and plan to stay there.

How did you pick your new realm? Seems like a decent realm, #25 ranked US server but a little more Alliance populated. Have you made an alt on there before xfering? I'm just asking because I want to start a fresh char on a new realm when Cata releases to meet new people to play with, maybe for a different gaming experience.

I have made an alt and been observing the realm for about a week now. Actually I found it by reading the Guild Recruitment - Horde forums; I posted something myself (at the time saying I would investigate and transfer to any interested realms if I had a good guild offer) and came across a guild that had raid times that worked and needed my spec (Prot Pally) on Turalyon, so I made an alt to investigate the realm and found it worlds better than Fizzcrank (To be expected, Fizzcrank is #230 in the US, right near the bottom)
From what the server says, Alliance is more populous but Horde hold WG more often (good for me as I'm Horde). The pugs there seem great; every one of them goes 10/12 minimum in ICC (compared to 5/12 if they're lucky on Fizzcrank) and Trade chat wasn't full of trolls and people arguing nonsense back and forth or calling out so-and-so for being fail.

Oh dear, I better make my Horde DK somewhere else the (I've had a Blood Elf DK on Fizzcrank for awhile, but if it is that low I might switch to somewhere else.)

Fizzcrank is great if you don't care about raiding and see raiding as "something to do" so you won't care to wipe consistently on stupid stuff. If you really want endgame raiding and progression, as I do, then Fizzcrank is a bad choice. The players are nice, but a lot of them just cannot grasp the mechanics of the game or of their own class to perform well.

If you are not good enough friends with them to talk with them beforehand about your 'feelings', (Ooh...sounds bad) then there is no need for a speech.
A simple: "Guys, I'm server transferring. I had fun playing here, but I decided to go look somewhere else. Good luck all!" before /gquit will suffice.
The ones that care will ask you, the rest...ah well....=)

Well, I managed to leave without drama, but someone (not in the guild, I don't know who) found one of the threads I posted and showed it to the GM, so now everyone in the guild I hear is really pissed at me and "lost all respect" for me since I was "complaining" about them.
Let me rephrase that: Someone took the time to:
A) Find one of my threads here (I guess since I didn't talk about it on the official boards) asking for advice with my issues with the guild
B) Armory my guild to find the name of the Guild Leader
C) Create a level 1 alt on my realm
D) Whisper the Guild Leader and point him to said thread, basically telling him "This guy has been complaining about you and saying your guild sucks for a while now"
E) Ruin whatever reputation I did have with the guild before I left
Oh well, I don't really care.

What I ended up doing was just said to people in guild chat that I got an offer from another guild on another server, and it was too good to pass up. Then, since the GM wasn't on I sent him an in-game mail thanking him for everything and saying the same thing, basically.
THEN, later, I found out the above post about someone going "Hey this ex-guildie of yours has been talking trash and saying you all suck" and making the guild go from "Sucks he left" to "What an a-hole I hate that guy now"
The moral, I guess, is not to ask for advice on websites where people in your guild can go to and see; even if you post sincerely looking for advice, you'll come off as complaining.

Kori, all you had to do was say, "Im looking for more and I believe that I have to go somewhere else to find it." Everyone would have wished you well and sent you on your way. Given the avenue you chose, I get the distinct impression that you do not believe that.
The guild respected you, liked you, thought you were a friend. The way you went about this obviously changes how a lot of them feel. If you returned those feelings, then no one would be looking up your posts and feeling the need to share them with the guild leader. Obviously, you didn't.
I hope you find what you are looking for, Koriolis. And if you don't find it the next place you land, I hope you are man enough not to seek justification on a message board for moving on.

If it is causing you so much concern, don't even Gquit.
Just do your server transfer, and the Guild Log will show 'Unknown has left the Guild'.
This - Simple, not messy (they dont even know who left lol) - and unless you have RL friends in that guild, no one will honestly care. YOU pay with YOUR money for this game; why should you care what anyone else thinks of you doing if it's for your gain?
If you're stuck on a boat with people you don't like, you see land, and you can swim, would you stay in the boat? Start swimmin' dude!

I never once, to my knowledge, said anything like "This guild sucks and is full of scrubs". I did, however, say the overall quality of player on Fizzcrank was bad (and this is true). I did say that a few people in the guild weren't pulling their weight, but you know that already. I did say that I was tired of wiping on stupid crap, and you know that too. It's not fun wiping on fights that you should know by now because people can't do what they need to do. We were trying to fix it for over a month and kept coming up short.
In any case, what's done is done and I'm happy on my new server. Best of luck to you and the guild. Maybe the terms of leaving could have been different, maybe not.
Also, I left as quickly as I did because I had an offer and it was basically "Transfer ASAP so you can join us on a raid tonight", so time was of the essence. I didn't have time to give any proper goodbye and, honestly, I didn't want to do a drawn out farewell.
