I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game (Review)
Overview:
I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game
, the game that is known by many as possibly one of the most masochistic freeware platform games (or possibly of all games) to exist. It was released in 2007 by Michael "Kayin" O'Reilly.
This game has 4 modes. Medium, Hard, Very Hard, and Impossible. The only major difference between these game modes is the number of save points throughout the game. Impossible mode definitely lives up to its name, as it has no save points at all.
The reason this game is so hard is because of two major things. The first is unexpected things that cause you to die. For example, the apples in this game kill you if you touch them. This also means things come at you from offscreen that you don't expect. Usually this is in the form of spikes and other hazards that are otherwise obvious. They come at abnormally high speeds. Bosses do this in their own way too. Though often you see some sort of warning noting for you to get out of the way. Nothing really remains consistent either. In this game, the apples can fall...up or down...or even home in on you at times. Knowing what to expect helps. How do you do that? Die a ton of times...
The second major thing that kills most players are the hazards that are obvious. Some of these obvious hazards require a ridiculously good bit of precision jumping and/or timing. It takes ages to get past most of them. Like above, you need to know what to expect. However, the problem is that because the precision and timing is so ridiculously difficult to do, even experienced players can die to that same crap on another play through. Fortunately, most bosses don't have such mechanics.
Oh also, you die in one hit.
The Storyline: (Spoiler Warning!)
You are The Kid, a 15 year old who wants to become The Guy. You have obtained an inheritance of a "Very Small Gun," which serves as your primary weapon from Grandfather The Guy. Father The Guy killed Grandfather The Guy, and that is who The Kid must defeat to become The Guy himself.
He journeys through the lands, most of which are clearly a reference to some well known game. Heck, even the music comes from other games. He collects 6 "units": one from each boss. This allows him to enter the Guy's Palace. He then fights his way through and confronts Father The Guy. After defeating him, he takes Father The Guy's gun, and goes back home, as he has succeeded in his quest.
My Opinions:
After looking at many others play this torturous hell of a game, I decided to give it a try. To retain my sanity, I played it on Medium Mode (which meant I had a pink ribbon on my head...). This didn't make the bosses any less harder, and I still died over 1500 times over the course of the game. On top of that, the game likes to crash a lot. The Adobe Standalone client is terrible and I hope Kayin does something about it.
Besides that, I thought this game was really well thought out and designed. I know a lot of people hate it because of how difficult it is to complete, but you have to stop and think about how this guy had the balls to rip off many video gaming companies and give the whole thing a violent shake. This game was so inspiring people made copycat versions of the game, like "I Wanna Be The Tribute" or "I Wanna Be The Fangame."
Overall, I think everyone should give it a try at least once. And if the game truly torments you,
you can watch the creator fail at his own game =P
.
Rating: 9/10 (90%)

This thread now discusses the game itself, or perhaps the brief article I wrote about it.

Wow, what a fail thread to commemorate 40k.
Gotta agree with Fayne here heh.

Wow, what a fail thread to commemorate 40k.
So glad that you're still as cynical as ever.
(That's not the point of this thread.)
Edit: Also. You're one to talk. You can't even get past the first few screens in the game. =)

Hehe, I can't tell if this thread is really about the game, or if that's just something Interest came up with to make a thread about him getting 40,000 posts :)

I think it is a pretty solid game even if some parts are disproportionately hard compared to the whole ( the whole game was pretty damn hard so that says something about what I think about some parts). There were some enjoyable parts though, like the Kirby Spiked Wall chase, the Wily Castle area, and the kart run (with the duck tales moon theme), although partially what made them enjoyable through the constant death was the music.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot to say it.... WUSS. :P

I have yet to get to the first save point... making things hard is all well and good. Making them unpredictable with no margin for error is just annoying. I don't enjoy this game. Yet, I feel compelled to keep trying and prove I can do it...
Darn you, Interest! I never would have even known about this game if it wasn't for you!
That was the point =D.
