Gonna have to disagree with that....
PvE is more about learning scripted maneuvers that people have already laid out for you. (Unless you actually do progression raiding, in which case yes, teamwork and knowledge of class is a safe assertion.)
PvP requires reflexes and an intense knowledge of every class and how it works. Luck does play a part, but about as much as PvE.
It seems we have a PvP elitest. Now don't get me wrong, I don't like PvE more than PvP, I'm just better at PvE. Why? Because A. My computer lags =P
B. I can roflstomp people in PvP, I just don't like it very much. It's too frantic and "OH FREAKING BUGGER!" when you miss something and the other guy kills you.
C. I meet the most jerks in PvP. /shrug
I like PvE a bit more becase:
A. Teamwork like I said. In my guild we run Naxx only on alts so we actually have to concentrate during the fight (unless it is the weekly.)
B. Make up. Each raid fight requires something different, whereas I can fight most opponents in PvP without changing my strategy.
Anyways... I know you're going to disagree with me here, and honestly I don't care. You like PvP more it seems and I like PvE better. You see me as inferior. I don't care. /shrug

That's like saying "drugs aren't the problem, the addiction is". Newsflash: It's not the addiction that damages your body (as much as the drugs themselves)
Excessive
gaming, and unhealthy lifestyle that can combined with it. Not gaming in general. Your analogy is faulty.
Admittedly, it was exaggeration. But do you honestly believe that most WoW players lead healthy lifestyles?
I'd be willing to bet money that the average game time per WoW player definitely qualifies as excessive (5+ hours per day) and also that the majority of WoW players do not exercise often or eat healthy.
There are exceptions to the rule, but this kind of lifestyle is definitely a common one among WoW players, and is what gives WoW its reputation.
Again, as I said in my original post (which Gnub cropped out in his quote, of course), I am not talking about the entire WoW population.
Okay, I have a few responsed I've been meaning to post. So here comes a wall of text.
First of all, I am not ashamed that I play WoW. And I think the main reason of this is I am a "well liked" person at the school that I attend. And only 2 of my friends play WoW with me. And probably almost every day at lunch me and a buddy talk about WoW. None of my other friends care.
They think the game is stupid, but hey, It's a video game. They dont care. So about the quote:
I think your assumption is incorrect. Yes I'm sure that (x) % of WoW players are possibly obese nerds? But I am also sure that a good % is not. For example, I am in 2 sports, Track and Basketball. I've broke 2 records in track, and play Varsity basketball. Also, about your eating comments, I do not drink soda, and havent in around 3 years. And my 2 irl friends that play are the same as me.
Also, I raid 2-3 night a week for hours on end. And I probably put 5+ hours of WoW in a day. But it's all about how you manage your time. For me between 3:30 p.m. and around 9:00 p.m. I have nothing better to do. Also a large majority of my guild are in sports or work out often. So for you to say that MOST of the WoW population are obese nerds etc. is false.
I think you should expand you horizon to the rest of the community. Maybe on your server everyone is an obese nerd. I do not know. But try to expand your knowledge a tad.

I am not ashamed. Mind you, I am militantly anti-social. I don't give a flying fig what strangers think of me. I do not require the approval of "society" to conduct my life.

ITT: Generalizations, and the people who make them.
Generalizations are bad. The only good in this world is knowledge. And donuts. Definitely donuts.

Idgaf if people know I play it or not. I'm very open about it, I don't go around telling everyone, but if gaming is brought up I'll mention that I play WoW and MW2.
Most people are surprised that I play WoW, becuse I'm not the typical "nerd", I'm a personal trainer and professional runner, among other things. Yet they are not one bit surprised that I play MW2. Go figure.
But yeah, I really don't care if people know I play.

I am not sure if this has been mentioned, but I figured I would add my two cents. Someone brought up the fact that World of Warcraft is not accepted socially due to the fact that everyone knows its addictive nature. This is true, however, how come someone can spend hours on end playing MLB 2K10 (or whatever that new baseball game is) and win 1 million dollars for pitching a perfect game, and then be displayed on the msn.com homepage? The guy spent just as much time as you and I do playing WoW, but because he won a large amount of money, he's suddenly presented by the media to the world.
The world is greedy. It's as simple as that, really. If I won a million dollars by being the first person to complete a raid, it wouldn't matter if I was greasy as hell, 500 pounds, and a complete social outcast, the world would recognize me as something different. All because I won some money. It's rather ridiculous.

You can call it a subliminal thing, all over TV its the nerd that plays a fantasy game. While the cool kids blow stuff up, or the little kids play games like pac-man. WoW is automatically linked to Dungeons and Dragons and other fantasy games from the past. Except when you play an action game for months on end, its called having fun, when you play a fantasy game, its called an addiction.
Although, they are both fantasies, because they are games aren't they?
People have had it pound into their head through TV all the time, and its just a subconscious rejection.
It can even be called a phobia at some point :O
When someone has an overpriced car, it's not something that's covered on television in popular TV shows, anything that is deemed as stupid, lame, nerdy, and the like are deemed as shameful. And this shameful behavior is already in most people's minds.
As for me, no, after you realize what is stated above, you know you don't have to be ashamed, because you know why others think it is shameful. Halo 3 is cool, and I play it sometimes, but other people think that's OK. After all, it hasn't been deemed as shameful.

You come to some very...odd conclusions, to say the least. I'm not really sure where to start.
Let's see here...
First of all, he won it on his sixth try. Six games in MLB 2K10 does not take an incredibly long time. In addition, he normally doesn't play sports games and only invested this large amount of time into the game
because
of the contest, not because it was addicting or because he has no social life.
Secondly, just because the person got media coverage for winning a million dollars by means of a video game does NOT mean he is going to be idolized or respected more than he was before by any means, and no one recognizes him as "something different". In fact, what struck me was that he asked permission to miss work and temporarily neglect his wife, which is respectable in itself. If anything, I credit him for that.
Finally, how on earth does this show that the world is greedy? I'm sure 90% of the population would be extremely surprised that a person won a million dollars playing a videogame, and that makes for pretty big news. I'm missing the connection here.
I should also remind you that he spent hours on end for a few days at the most and won a million dollars, while WoW players
pay
money year-round to spend hours on end every day.
There's probably a point to be made somewhere in what you posted, but I'm just not seeing it.

Before I began playing Wow my brother and a couple of friends played, and they played a lot. So of course I made fun of them. Nerds and whatnot. My brother used to tell me details, like " Today I got my new chest piece from a dungeon", and of course my reply would be "Who gives a ----?"...
Then, after about 8 months of me just watching TV (Breaking Bad is so cool by the way) and playing FIFA 2010 on the PS3, I thought to myself, I´ll try that game, so my brother invited me to get the one month free and I told him I probably be bored after a week or so.
Guess what, I didn´t get bored, I got my lock to lvl 80 and now I´m the biggest WoW-nerd.
So I´ve been on both sides of love/hate Wow-drama and I can say that I´m proud of playing it. It´s fun and those who don´t play are missing out. I talk about WoW with all my friends, even those who doesn´t play.
I try to explain and sometimes I get them interested (yeah, I really do) and sometimes i don´t. And I play 4-5 hours everyday, sometimes less and sometimes more. I do like sports, i work-out and I eat healthy food. So about the generalizations, it goes both way. You don´t have to be a geek, fat and locked inside your room 24/7 to like this game and that´s what makes it so great for me.
If I were you guys I´d be wearing a "Play World of Warcraft! It´s great"-t-shirt.
And if people look at you in a strange way just think about what you would do to him with your Arms Warrior or Fire Mage. ;-)

No, I am not ashamed.. :) I often joke with my class mates about the game...
First I am talking to my friend about WoW, then I suddenly turn around an ask a random classmate something that sounds geeky :) he/she usually responds with a "ye.... riiiiight..."
And when people laugh at me for playing or comes up with stupid statements I just ignore them, because I know they are losers xD
Seriously though, I got both friends that plays and do not, and every1 is totally cool with it, we respect eachothers hobbies and interests. :) Come to think of it, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones..

Alot of my friends thought the same aswell, when i said sorry can't come out tonight i have a Raid.
Non would understand.
...
Even my Ex went nuts when i played WoW.. no ideas why, because i only played when she was watching her soaps.
You guys seem to have a drastic misunderstanding of outsider's views on WoW.
People don't care that you pay $15 a month to play WoW instead of spending however much going to bars. Its the fact that you are immersing yourself into a virtual world
instead
of immersing yourself in the real world. People see that you would rather socialize with people through a virtual character in an online game then spend the night out with some friends. Sure, the latter might be more expensive and you might get a hangover, but that's life. What you are doing in the game is an alternate reality that you clearly prefer to real life.
If I had a friend who played WoW and I wanted to hang out with them and they said, "Sorry, I have a raid tonight" I would seriously question my friendship with them. Prioritizing a life you lead in a virtual world with people you have never met over your friends is a very dangerous thing, which is why I
never
let any gaming I do interfere with my social life. I did once, and was appalled at myself for doing so. I'm thankful that the person remained friends with me after they realized what I had blew them off for.
TL/DR: People hate WoW because it steals people away from reality, which causes them to neglect the things that should really matter.
Oh and...
I'm not, and you shouldn't be either. it's just a game, ur not a nerd for playing it
Classic "nerd in denial" right here.

Ashamed? Heck no, loads of people play games. Just because I only play 1 game is no different from others. I enjoy wow, its the only game I've played longer than a month!
I know what I like and Im not ashamed of it. I do tend do ward of other people to start playing though, since I've seen how addicted some people can get.
Btw not hardcore raider, only casual player. I tend to log on some times and just chat to guildies and RL friends. Maybe I should start working on loremaster, hmmm....
