The 5.0.4 patch with the new talent trees structure is a great example of the game getting easier. If by easier you mean cleaner; then sure. Since the talents that were absorbed into the specs were the ones that everyone took, since those were the 'no #$%^' talents that were needed to play the class.
Another example is that rogues do not even carry poisons now. Back in the day the rogue had to learn to use poison via quest chain and then had to use stronger and stronger poisons. Now there is a poison talent in the rogue spell book that applies whichever poison the rogue wishes to use and the rogue does not have to carry any poisons at all in the bags. This was a long time coming; after all, they got rid of ammo for guns and are steadily parring back on needed reagents for spells that just cluttered up player's back packs.
There are just too many examples to list of how over the years the game has let go of things that felt to make the game a grind - like the skills associated with various weapons in order to hit things.I was happier then hell when weapon skills were taken out, since getting a new axe after using nothing but swords for 10 levels sucked massively, since you had to head off to the middle of no where to level it up, and if you had really bad luck you could be stuck for hours. The grind still exists in WoW, but it's set up so you can grind what you want to, rather then what is 'needed'.
It appears that Blizzard is attempting to reach to a younger audience that really does not want to grind out the efforts that most of us who have been playing for years had to do.I doubt that in all honesty; they've just realized after 7 years that the game needs some stream lining.
