I was able to replicate the error on my test account and fix it by logging in and out. So for now, logging out and back in is a quick fix--if that somehow doesn't work, you can try the email thing other users have done. Either way, we'll fix it soon. Sorry for any inconvenience and thanks for the help, you guys <3

No problem.

I just had it happen to me, and I was about to tear someone's throat out, but the quick fix worked, and so my wrath is appeased. Still, will be very grateful for whatever work is done to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Just thought I'd mention that I had the same problem today (No Premium). I also then couldn't log back into Wowhead once I tried the classic log out/log in approach to fix things, due to:
That email address is already a unified login. Please provide the master password to merge your accounts. If you're unsure what your master password is, try using the password from one of these accounts:
ZAM: johnnyrizzle|WH
Fortunately I found this thread and manage to log into my ZAM account (after a password reset - don't think I've ever used my ZAM account) and then refreshed my Premium status in my Wowhead settings.
Yay forums.

I just had my premium status made inactive yet again.
Only way to fix it was to log out, log back in, go back to my account settings and "refresh" the premium status a few times before it would finally realise I had it (after repeated "An error occurred while updating your Premium status" messages).
I can't wait for the day when we finally get rid of this mess of a system and have something that works all the time. This is the most flaky thing on Wowhead. Everything else works so well.
tl;dr: Fix it, please.

This just happened to me, I logged out, back in, went to setting and clicked update and it was fixed. Clicking update before logging did nothing.

Follow the steps above to get it back, most of us did that already and got our Premiums back.

So, I waited a day to see if this was going to be fixed for me, but it hasn't yet. I have tried both the logout/in and then spam click the update link to no avail and the switch your email trick which also didn't work. Just wondering if this is something related to my account since these "tricks" didn't fix it. I also tried to send a message to "Wowhead" through the feedback@wowhead.com and have not heard back from that.
Please help!
Thanks

Ok we've published a few fixes which should fix this for everyone. If your account is supposed to be premium but isn't currently goto
https://www.wowhead.com/account#premium
and click the update button.

Yes I do this and the green text pops up and says its been fixed, but this still hasn't resolved anything. I still have adds, no premium, and captchas.... -.-
Just started today.
Originally they had the same email address, but I had changed my wowhead.com's email address to a different one a while ago, while leaving the Zam one the same.
Order number: 46691827397947
Description: 12 Month Premium Subscription - 29.99
Your subscription will automatically renew on 2011-12-27.
FIXED IT
I had to do some shuffling and password resetting for both sites before they would talk to each other correctly.

Fixed it also, by doing some changing on my zam.com account.

i'm still having trouble.
i've managed to merge my accounts but i'm having an issue that's actually come up for me before. when i first went premium i think i did it on a zam account i already owned and then connected the two accounts. however trying to connect the accounts made a zam account "asakawa|WH" (which is the only one it would let me merge with recently) which is not the one that is premium flagged.
the result of all this is i've lost premium on WH.
overall, i've got to say that this recent change wasn't cool from my point of view. i'm sure that for most wowhead users it was something they barely noticed but i don't use zam, i only ever use wowhead and ever since premium was introduced it has always been far too complicated to actually give you money and get a premium service.
hope i can get it sorted before too long.

We're going to have an announcement later today about this for both regular and premium users--we're very sorry with how these login upgrades took place and will do our best to make it up to you guys.
Asakawa, feel free to write up your complaints even further to --it's always helpful to hear what went wrong, how the experience was confusing to you, and so on. We want to make this smoother for the outliers who had trouble so we don't have this happen ever again in the future. We also need to make sure your premium is restored and compensate you for any lost time.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Ashelia##DELIM##

Apparently, I had different e-mails on Wowhead and ZAM, although I thought I had already changed both to the one I currently use. Even though I have the same username on ZAM, the unified login was unable to merge my ZAM account with the Wowhead one.
Changing the email on Wowhead solved this.

well, i'm not entirely sure what's happened in my case to make it such a difficult process because it seems to all go back to when i first signed up for premium which was quite a while ago now.
i imagine the problem occurred because the current "zam" uses the same user/logins from the old allakhazam days (it was an important community site back when FFXI was a current game) and wouldn't let me sign up for a premium account with an already used email address.
it's probably a much simpler process for those who never had a zam login before... maybe.
i don't want to overstate the complaint bit, i'm not "outraged" or those other internet hyperboles it's just taken/taking more effort than it really ought to.
good luck with generally getting things sorted and if there's specific info (usernames, premium order numbers etc.) i could email to that address that could help solve my specific issue then please let me know.

You are currently a premium member without premium showing up, right Asakawa? Have you emailed ?
Most people have been fixed with updates to the system, it seems that you're an outlier. I'm going to spend some time today looking at your account history on ZAM and see if I can track down why this specific issue has happened to you.

Happening to me as well.
