I have done several instances, heroics, yes even on lvl 80 I have seen locks use hellfire when the healer had hardtime to heal the tank.
Recently, I got kicked by a group including 2 locks because I told them to not use hellfire (no they didn't use void+ hellfire combo)
So I created this thread so you guys can give tips on how to convince locks NOT to use hellfire or voidwalker (why ever use void in instances?)
Yes I have threatened to not heal them but that did not work... (When I healed on my alt)

idiots are idiots.
this isn't a problem i see at all. i haven't seen anyone use hellfire for AoE dps in years (literally).
...i think you're maybe exaggerating the issue but if people use it then let them know that it is a DPS loss and particularly unhelpful. if they continue to use it then i'm sure the pug heroic will succeed just fine and don't group with them again.

The only use I've found for hellfire is for committing suicide in Alterac Valley in the middle of the alliance offensive.

I've seen demo locks use it in pvp wih immolation aura, dishes out some pretty nice damage you just need healing a lot. But never in pve.

I mentioned this before, but WOWwiki has an
interesting statement
about Seed of Corruption being inferior to Hellfire in some cases:
Due to its overall damage limitation, which is around 13,500 to all affected mobs (before all modifiers like criticals and certain debuffs), Seed of Corruption is inferior to Hellfire when dealing with large groups (like around fifteen or even more mobs).
Anyone want to chirp in about whether they find Hellfire to be useful in an actual AoE situation?

be a little bit careful with that because that note was made before patch 3.3 which included a tweak to AoE damage caps.
now all AoE spells cap at 10 mobs so there's no reason for the AoE spell that scales best not being the best in all cases.
that said, there are few situations in serious content where more than 15 mobs are encountered and, if it were the case that hellfire scaled better, i can't imagine a situation where it would be worth trying to change the AoE spell of choice based on the number of targets.

Aye, I'd been thinking about the AoE change too. Which means, situations "with 15 mobs or more" might not be as useful.
I had a situation yesterday, where it didn't matter how slow I went with SoC, I was still drawing aggro. Especially, when it was critting. (This tank was way undergeared for ICC 5-mans) So I basically ended up switching to RoF as my backup, and that generally worked.
Comparing RoF against Hellfire, their base damage is 675dps and 451dps respectively. (They're both fire spells, so they'll buff evenly, right?)
But, Hellfire will go almost twice as long, on a single casting. So, on a fully channeled casting, you've got 2700 (RoF) base damage vs. 6765 (Hellfire) base damage.
So, thinking about it?
Hellfire causes you damage, unless you can mitigate it. A negative.
Hellfire's nearly triple damage costs only slightly more than RoF. So, more efficient. (Except for the damage you take, yourself)
From what I've read, Hellfire also doesn't crit (while RoF's ticks can?)... Which, might seem potentially useful in a situation, where providing an even output of damage could be more desirable?
Don't get me wrong. I'm still thinking Hellfire has a very narrow set of circumstances in which it might be useful. But, I guess I'm also trying to think of situations where it might actually be
desirable
to use it over the other AoE spells. (Such as, AoE Lock-Tanking?)
Question: will Hellfire proc
Nether Protection
? Since you're getting one tic a second, for fifteen seconds, it seems you could get some good mitigation that way.
Any ideas about where it might be useful... other than, intentionally killing yourself? ;-)

stop trying to find uses for it. blizzard hasn't managed to find a use for it other than fixing it and calling it immolation aura. it was once the single highest damaging AoE spell in the game (vanilla) but it isn't any more so there really isn't any discussion once that is eliminated.
you want a low threat AoE? just stop AoEing.
/assist tank ► single target damage
you want an efficient AoE?
firstly, why? warlocks are an inefficient class, we use LT.
secondly if you really must be efficient then use RoF
the biggest issue here is that you're suggesting hellfire for low threat situations but when your tank has low threat that is the last time you want to be in melee range where the pulling point is only 110% and if you do pull you will be one shot before you get time to react with shatter. mix that with the obvious draw-back of self-harm and hellfire is a big loser in the AoE fight.
your enthusiasm for the class is admirable but the way things are done now isn't the result of a lack of thought or innovation. i promise.
