I can't really see how pvp can get harder. It depends on your skill / gear and the enemies skill / gear!

PVP is you against another player. By definition, it cannot get harder or easier, as all changes affect your enemies as well.
Certain classes can become harder to play, or fights can be longer or shorter, and the playerbase may develop to have a more skilled group of players, but it can't get harder in general.

I think mid-TBC was likely the time when skill played the strongest part - specifically when you could buy lower ranking PVP weapons with honor, so the gear difference between yourself and a higher ranking opponent was not as noticeable as say, now.
Nowadays you have ilvl 232 heroic/Furious gear (with ilvl 232 PVE weapons) against ilvl 251-264 Wrathful gear. The big killer is weapons, like always. I'm not sure about other weapons, but the
Unsharpened Ice Razor
dagger versus the
Wrathful Gladiator's Shanker
is an enormous difference -
62% more maximum damage and 26% more DPS
. That's just an insane boost. Even compared to Blood Weeper (a more likely candidate for PVP) it's still a 26% maximum damage increase.
All that said, WotLK has still brought a lot to the metagame and shaped and changed things, however it's killed a lot of spec versatility in many classes such that everyone is running the same specs with very little variance. In this way, you know that your opponent has new counters X and Y, but you have new tools V and Q.

I'm wearing a Blood Weeper and Ice Razor, and my MMR is 1950 in 2s. We played 70 games (43-27) this week to get our rating above 1800 and my PR is still at 1625 (despite being in 62~ of the 70 games). It's been an enormous challenge to overcome things like Shadow's Edge lolstorm and double DPS comps running PVE hero with ICC epics.
All points in my post are completely valid.

The overall game changed.
If we talk about arenas, BC was more strategic ( mana wars, CD management, etc... ) but in Wotlk days, doing even small mistakes is less forgiving than it was in the arena early days.
