I am coming back to WoW after an exile of 6 months I find I need to redo my Blood DPS spec. As I searched around I find that the recommended specs all include Bloodworms. I haven't been a big fan of the clumsy worms, and I excluded them from my previous builds. What is the current thinking, and what could I use to in there place and keep my DPS respectable?

I'm not trying to argue that Bloodworms aren't the best option for those points, because they are. I'm just curious how much DPS they add. I tried a build without them and I saw no discernable change outside of the normal range my DPS normally fluctuates in. It could have been luck, or what have you, and intellectually I know they add X DPS. I'm just wondering what the value of X is, out of curisoity really. So if anyone knows...thanks in advance!

Mobs are programmed to hit random targets with their bad spells and stuff. Blood worms make excellent cannon fodder to draw these random attacks. Every blood worm getting stomped is an attack you did evade.

In the spirit of alacrity I spec'ed the Bloodworms. I am happy to say they weren't met with calls of "What's with the Worms" and they didn't interfere with the runs at all. I don't like them, but for now the are included.
I would like this discussion to continue, but on the thread of how best to spec. without them. I just don;t like the buggers, and I am going to pursue a way to delete them. What would you do without them... I wonder?

Personally, I always spec into mark of Blood w/the worms, as opposed to 1/2 IBP. I get that it uses a Blood Rune, but it's not a bad mitigation ability. If your tank has 40k buffed health, say, then every hit they take heals them for 1600...not too shabby.
When I specced out of them, I grabbed 2/2 IBP and Vampiric Blood, both for survivability. I do't really like Rune Tap without the improves version, because it's a small heal. I think the other two talents will keep you alive longer, and remember, you do 0 DPS when you're dead.

Bloodworms provide consistent DPS and a very small amount of healing to you. They die to one or two AoE attacks so there is little risk of them chewing up Chain Heals and the like on intensive damage fights (Sind, BQL). As of 3.1.1 or so, they were also adjusted to stay closer to the DK and to be lowest-priority possible on CH, PoM, etc.
Finally, it is a DPS loss to not spec into them.
Rune Tap and MoB are a waste: it's not your job to heal yourself or the raid
(though you are healing yourself somewhat with the use of DS as Blood). 1/2 Imp. BP is the best filler point for your buck since it does not interfere with your survivability or your rotation.

They also, for the record, love to eat up, and totally waste, smart heals (Wild Growth, Circle of Healing, Chain Heal).
For the record, Blood Worms (being a Guardian) are the lowest priority on healing from those spells. That means if the Worm gets a heal, no one else (including permanent pets) didn't need a heal.
