Where did the sense of adventure go?

This weekend I've felt pretty sick and most of my friends have gone home or went to do something with their girlfriends, so I decided to do a playthrough of the game Doom. While playing through the game, it made me wonder - why does it seem like there isn't that sense of adventure in more modern games? Not knowing what's behind the next door, having to battle your way through hordes of enemies when you're trapped in the room after you grabbed the key, the fear of encountering a Cyberdemon... where did these type of things go? It kind of makes me sad when I think about how there really isn't much adventure in most games lately.

There never was a "sense of adventure". It's all just nostalgia. And when you're younger everything feels more fresh and new of course.
Its not "just nostalgia"... did you read the OP? I JUST played through Doom yesterday, and am wondering why more games don't have that same sort of feel to them. My guess is that people have demanded longer games, so the quality of them has to go down. I played through Doom in a couple of hours on Ultraviolence, but the whole time was just good clean fun.

I find games nowadays to be a lot shorter.
It seems most games are catering to the instant gratification/multiplayer market, churning out fps after fps after fps. With single player mode lasting 4 hours, if you're lucky. I've seen people rate a game solely only the time it took them to get 'achievement' points, usually quicker = better.

Zelda. Those are adventure games.
Followed closely by Republic Commando.

Reminds me of Splinter Cell #1. Stealth... and the patrolling guards still creeped me out when I was hiding thinking, "Are they going to find me?"
