How essential are shamans?

Hello wowhead, I am a longtime reader but a first time poster. I am in my guild's number one progressing raid group, and just about every person in it is an exceptional player. The problem is, we have no shaman, and the composition is probably not ideal in many other ways. The composition looks like: me (unholy dk), rogue (dunno spec), arcane mage, two hunters, pally tank, warrior tank, resto druid, disc priest, holy pally. If we WERE to make changes to the raid group, what would be the best way to do so? The biggest problem I can think of is the lack of bloodlust. I am just looking for discussion on exactly how important shamans are to a 10-man raid and what I specifically can do to fix the composition of my own raid. Thanks!

We were discussing 10 man raid composition yesterday on IRC, and I would say, to sync for melee, my ideal 10 man would be:
Warrior tank, Druid OT, Holy priest, Resto Shaman, Holy paladin, Retribution paladin, MM hunter, Frost DK, rogue (for damage, not buffs) and + 1 (mage)
The only thing that the shaman would being would be 5% spell haste as 20% melee haste would be covered by the DK.

I have heard that 10-man encounters are designed with the group not having Bloodlust / Heroism, while 25-man's are scaled in a certain way that includes the use of Bloodlust / Heroism. I am not 100% sure about that, but it is currently a rumor going around. What this, in effect, would do, is remove any necessity for a Shaman in a 10-man.

You can replace the +1 (mage) with shaman then, I put mage, because the person in question was an arcane mage.
And then UH DK instead of frost.

That's what they claim.
But shamans do bring great buffs, and DK's do have better place to put points into.
I would say if you have 2 hunters in a 10 man, and you want a shaman, you drop one of the hunters.
But honestly if you're working well together, I'd say keep going with what you have.
On another hand, I believe that most fights in ICC require 2 healers. So you may want to look at it that way. Maybe you can get awesome shaman dps/healer, thus replacing one of your healers.

:( when I look at the "needed" classes I noticed that warlocks are completely unnecessary for a raid and can easily be done without one.
dam locks need something more to contribute to the raid other then the Soul Stones (rarely are a game breaker as far as I've seen) and Health Stones (people forget they even have them)
Demonology spec? A great buff to all casters, of course it's far more noticeable in 25 mans than in 10 mans but still.
