Bosses' level

I was just reading up on
Omen
, for the
Lunar Festival
achievements, and noticed an interesting bit of text in the first comment:
His level appears to be the average level of the group plus 3 (similar to most bosses).
Do many bosses set their level, according to the average level of players in your group?
Is this why, I can walk into a raid area for level 50 players, and still see a skull there for the boss? (And have him hit pretty hard, even though I'm at level 80?)

What you're seeing is most likely a mob that is 10 or more levels higher than you. The game will show them as level ? and their icon will be a skull.

No. I'm level 80.
Specifically, I was attempting to farm High Priest Thekal for the Swift Zulian Tiger. Zul'Gurub is a 20-man level 60 raid. But he still didn't have a level displayed, when I targeted him.

Raid bosses all count as the skull + 3 level even if they are from a level 60 instance.

What does "the skull" mean? Is it the average of the raiders' levels?

Skull type bosses are the hardest mobs to kill in WoW. Their level is not displayed as a number, but as a death's head sign. These bosses have a "dynamic" level - when a numeric level is required for some calculation, they are considered to be 3 levels above the player character involved in that calculation. That is, if both a level 60 warrior and a level 65 druid both tank the same skull type boss, the boss will make crushing blows on the warrior as if it was 63, and on the druid as if it was 68. Similarly, the boss will resist their respective powers as a 63- and 68-level creature would.

Ugh. Blizzard doesn't want me single-farming this boss for that mount then.

Depends which boss you mean, If you're talking about Zul'Gurub, which I expect you are, both the mount bosses can be solo'ed at 80 quite easily by a few classes. I have done it alot on my prot pally and a few times on my prot warrior, however attempts on my Enh shaman and Affliction warlock were somewhat ... crap.

Aye. I'm a new, level-80 Warlock, and my wife is a new 80 Paladin. It hurt. A lot. ;-)
I've been trying to work up a special spec, just for hitting this guy. (And, reading the comments of those who went before) I'll have to see what I can come up with.
Thanks for the helpful responses on this, guys.

Basically, approach skull level mobs with the same gear that you would wear to go to a current level raid. You need the same amount of hit rating, defense, and expertise that you would against the Lich King when fighting, say,
Pyroguard Emberseer
, if you want to hit every attack, not be crit, and not be parried or dodged. Granted, in some cases (Pyroguard) it's really not necessary because their health and damage dealt is not variable. 24k health and lolfire damage are pretty negligible at 80.

Even though the mob you linked is no longer a Boss (for reasons I don't quite grasp), you are correct.
@ retripala343: The way his original post was worded made it seem like he saw a random "skull" mob, in which case, what I said was very true. A boss is a boss, no matter what level you are, you will only ever see a skull.

Ah, I thought something was strange. Must be because a) the Seal of Ascension isn't needed anymore and b) LFD, meaning that pugs who don't know what they're doing may well wander up into that area.
Just my guess.

no, he's a boss but not a raid boss. dungeon bosses actually show their level, which you can see better in higher level dungeons where they are +2 to the
intended
level such as
Erekem
whereas
Lucifron
is listed in the database as (Boss) and is a static +3 to your level
I think you misunderstood. Pyroguard Emberseer is a boss, yes, however he used to be a "skull" boss whereas now, he is a regular elite.
I'm going to take a stroll into ubrs and see if
The Beast
and
General Drakkisath
are still classed as "skull" bosses. Not entirely sure why Blizzard would feel the need to change their classification after so many years, unless Damaera's theory is correct and they did it to make it easier for LFD groups.

The bosses are still level 63. Apart from that they resist and miss and stuff as if they were level 83

Precisely - if you go into the dungeon through LFD you'll note that in the minimap it will have the number 15 - the upper area through the left used to be a 15-man raid, and the earliest you can raid. I believe Stratholme used to be this way as well.
