I would probably suggest Hunter or Paladin for a new player.
Druids? Very adaptable, but their complexity could be prone to making a new player
mediocre at all roles.
The costs for gearing a Druid are also prohibitively high. I generally tend to think that Druids are a good alt for someone who has already reached 80 at least once.

I make a terrible mage on my Warrior, so I'll choose tanking, thank you very much.
Thats beacuse you have too little SP....
On the topic though:
Go with maging first if you are a newcomer. Tanking requirs some knowledge on bosses and as a mage you are able too see how they work and make one of the best DpS in game.
I've actually seen warriors gemming for SP... And they'll never give me reason's why. Its always "GTFO L2play warriors nub!" when I ask...

EDIT: Is Maging a verb? Can you Mage something?
Mage isn't even a word :(
At least if you believe the English dictionary.
Doesn't stop me trying to sneak it in during a game of scrabble though!
