Probably applying patches to the actual servers, not the game.
Cheers.

According to a Blizz rep i spoke to about a year ago. Tuesdays scheduled maintenance includes the following:
Backup of all current server data.
Restore damaged data.
Apply minor bug patches.
Repair performance issues.
Upgrade hardware systems.
Various other maintance issues that may arrise.
Im going to ask again, just to be updated.

How does data get damaged? Long explanation... How do you get corrupt files on your computer? How do you get errors with programs on your computer. It just happens... Constant use of a drive will do it also.

As far as i know there are no hot fixes or patches going on atm.
The did hotfix it so the Boneguard Footmen you kill as part of the Tournament Daily no longer grant Lovely Charms for the Holiday Event. Prior to maintenance today they did grant the charms, when all you had to do was run them down with the horse. :P There's a lot of little fixes that go on that we never ever hear official tell of, usually they just fix little things that aren't working as intended in the first place.
But yeah, as far as I know Tuesday is just the day for regular preventative maintenance, upgrades, fixes, and hardware replacements. Though there are also rumours that the devs use the time to hunt for the
Time-Lost Proto-Drake
. :)

Have you ever de-fragged your hard drive? Run a system scan? Done an in-depth virus protection sweep? Updated all the drivers for every part of your computer system?
It's not instant, is it? And generally they require enough system resources that it's best not to run other resource-hogging processes while performing maintenance tasks.
As for other games' maintenance schedules, as far as I know none of the other MMORPGs are as big and as popular as WoW. It only stands to reason the numerous WoW servers will require regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly.
Otherwise everyone would be on here raging about unacceptable amounts of glitches, lag, bugged quests/NPCs, getting booted off at regular intervals, etc.
Even as it is some quests get bugged. Last time I checked, the Don Carlos hat quest was bugged, and impossible to complete. Most level 80 players wouldn't notice unless they decided to go back and do some BC content, and thus when the bug was fixed (most likely to happen during scheduled maintenance) no one would be aware of "hot fixes or patches going on" except the people applying the hotfixes.
Do you take your car in for oil changes and tire rotation? Sure. On Tuesdays, the WoW servers are getting their fluids topped off. ;-)
