Too many quests in the quest log.

I care about the lore. Not just in WoW but in any MMO I am playing. It is the only means I have of immersing myself in the world.
I find that sometimes I tend to get overwhelmed or bogged down with the sheer number of quests in my quest log and then it becomes my point just to whittle the number down, not to necessarily fulfill them with any sense of understanding.
Here is an example. You go to a quest hub. There are 4 NPCs there with 8 quests. I grab them all. Even if I stopped to read all eight of them, by the time I've read the eighth one, I've completely forgotten what the first one was about. Now I am just running around gathering mushrooms, killing boars, interrogating sprits, planting seeds, and countless other things, and I don't even know why. But that's the efficient way to do it, right? Especially since all of the quests can be completed in the same general area. There is no point in going into that cave four times when you can complete them all on one trip.
I'm thinking maybe I don't care about efficiency anymore. I know that there are plenty of quests that are meaningless and, by themselves, don't add any value to the lore or add anything to the game except giving you spiders to farm for eggs.
Do any of you have this problem? Maybe I'm just slow and I can't retain the details of ten quests in my brain. If my goal was to level as quickly as possible, maybe I might think differently. But I am not in a rush, not trying to gear up to raid, or anything like that.

Not all quests are important to Lore; the standard 'kill 50 of these' 'collect 40 of that' don't matter as much as the quest that lead to the long lines; such as the Tower of Athralax in Darkshore, the Defias chain in Westfall, the wiping out of the Blackrock Orcs in Redridge and so on and so forth.
