Greetings!
I am returning to
WoW
with my
level 53 Undead Warlock
, and would appreciate any advice on what I should do to become a better Warlock.
I am new to
WoW
, and I am a student of
Warcraft
. I want to become a quality player and a benifit to my raid team & Guild.
Any advice will be most appreciated!

Well said
Withambomb!
I am using keybindings, as well as mouse turning, but that is good advice for any new player.
I love "hotkeys" and, as Photoshop calls them, actions or batches!
Thanks again! Cheers!

A small side note:
I know that gear comes later in my leveling, but I don't want to be the
"Lock with crappy gear"
that seasoned, albeit jerk, players make fun of. haha
At level
53+,
what kind of gear should I focus on? I realize that intellect is important, spell power etc. does this gear come from quest rewards, Auction house or ?

Sounds right with everything else I've read so far.
Does the gear sets come in only when I ding 80? or can we aquire gear sets earlier? This is one thing I've not come across in my research thus far.

Well THATS certainly nice to know! It's only 10 levels, but 70 seems a more attainable goal for some silly reason.
Reading all the posts here, everyone seems incredibly knowledgeable about DPS, Hits, Crits etc. do the addons have anything to do with this?
I have some major addons I have found to be helpful:
•Ark Inventory
•Bartender 4
•Cartographer
•Deadly Boss Mods
•ForteXorcist
•Gatherer
•Omen Threat Meter
•and Quest Helper
Edited for new addons:
•Auctioneer
•Lightheaded
•Quartz
Still debating Carbonite at this point.
I realize, of course, that some of these I won't need until later, level 70 and 80, (85 with the new expansion). But I wanted to have them in place, and build a familiarity with them.
Are there any other addons anyone finds helpful or necessary that I don't currently run?

The LFG system is your friend. (Though what kind of friend would put you with some dorks, you have to ask yourself!) This is a major game-changer. No longer are lowbies (or midbies) consigned to begging high-level players for dungeon runs. And, they can learn their role much better along the way, before they hit 80-level raiding. (Which can be brutal, both the instances themselves, and some of the people you may end up playing with)
You can get better gear in instances than you can outside. Even, before you hit 80. You can also get some raging XP, and so you won't remain 53 (or in your 50s) for long! Don't worry so much about
which
gear, so much as if it is
better gear
. It all evens out in the end. But if you are going to stack your stats, then you want to target for HP (hit points) and SP (spell power).
When in doubt about whether gear is better, look at its item level and compare. (Though, a blue item at a lower item level and lower character level requirement can still be much better than a green item at a higher item level and character level. Compare the stats to see how much you are trading up. Some of my level-70 blue stuff is still better than some level-78 green stuff I'm getting in places!)
And don't really worry about getting any sets together, until you're level 80, or know a good tailor. By the time you do get a set together, you will probably pass up the point where the combined set bonus (and the benefits of the gear) doesn't really help you all that much anyway. You will probably be getting better items to put into those slots, and break up the set anyway. Those sets are relics of days when 60 or 70 was the level-cap.
Basically, if you can put up with some occasional stupidity for fifteen to twenty minutes at a time -- and it's not ALL the time (even if it happens often enough to FEEL like it!) -- then using the LFG will be to your advantage, to level up faster and to get better gear. And most people who LFG are fairly reasonable. Especially, if you're not being a jerk. You want to get in good with the Healer. Drop a soulstone on him first thing, and keep one on him every time it runs out. (Every 15 minutes is the cooldown) Also? One of the ways in which I make good is to bodyguard the Healer. In the odd situation where he draws aggro, I'll use Death Coil and then Searing Pain to first knock the mob off the healer, and then to begin pulling it onto myself. If the Tank hasn't regained aggro by this time, then it's much better off for the group if YOU go down, than if the Healer does. You can always get rezzed and re-buffed. Making the healer your friend means that he's much more likely to keep your health topped off (making it easier for you) with an occasional heal, and he may even watch your pet. (By the way? Turn off your Imp's phasing ability, if using an Imp... it prevents buffs, prevents healing and doesn't really save him once he enters the fracas, so why use it in a dungeon? It wastes mana too, though that isn't usually an issue unless he has been firebolting away like mad) Most of all? the LFG will help you not be that low-geared guy who others consider to be "dragging the team down".
You'll have a 15-30 minute wait for most LFG runs, anyway, so you can continue your usual questing while waiting. Just make sure that, when you agree to enter the instance, you don't teleport in from a place where some big ugly thing is going to be waiting when you teleport back. Find yourself a nice, safer spot, off to the side.
I'd also suggest you pick up
Omen Threat Meter
(to make sure you don't out-aggro the Tank, and it'll give you a handy warning when the Healer is about to get aggro too),
Necrosis
(a warlock addon - turn off the vocalizations attached to spells, they're annoying) and
Quartz
(a small addon which displays your casting with a red bar to estimate latency, so you have a better idea when to start casting your next spell. You'll get more spells off, faster, this way, and will place better in the DPS chart). I also suggest you try
Bartender
. It allows you to arrange your spell bar(s) and pet bar in a much more intuitive and intelligent way than the default WoW user interface. It just requires a little bit of initial setup... say, 15-20 minutes, once you figure out what the options mean.
Lastly? Find yourself a good guild. I like to LFG, but it's nice to be able to hang out and/or chat with "friends", while playing. The sooner the better. You will most likely be able to pick the brains of a senior Warlock for what to do next, and how to gear. Though, always do your own study. I've come up with things which my seniors have never seen before. I can out-DPS some of them, while having crappier gear, and can do better in PvP. But I still try to show the same friendship and sense of mutual respect. They play the game their way, and I play it mine.
Best of luck. Welcome back to the game!

Oops! Didn't see this post on your addons before I made my suggestions. ;-)
I personally like
Carbonite
a lot. Questhelper didn't do it for me, but your mileage may vary. Carbonite (see
http://carboniteaddon.com
) has a lot of functions which just help in the game. Not least, it is always communicating with other peoples' installations of Carbonite. So, you will often know when an enemy player is in your area. (Useful if you're on a PvP server) It also tells you when guildies level up, so you can congratulate them. And, tells you where guildies are in the world.
I also like
Atlas
. It not only provides you maps of the world, but you can also get dungeon maps for it too. (Very handy, when trying to find out where a certain boss is, and figuring how to get from Point A to Point B)
ArkInventory
rocks. I might've recommended it earlier, but didn't want to overdo the suggestions.
You may also want to check out
MetaHUD
. It puts some nice big (and transparent, if you desire) HP and MP bars up on your screen, so you can keep a much better idea where things are, without having to check your little portrait in the corner. It also tracks the HP/MP of your current target. And, of your pet.
There's also one other addon... I forget the name. (Someone help me out here?) It will calculate out all of your SP bonuses and such, and estimate just how much damage a given spell will give you. It will overlay your spells on your spellbar with a number. Wonderful stuff.
Also, I highly suggest you get
Auctioneer
. It will not only help you to sell items you get (for the best price point), but to know when some idiot is trying to bilk you into overpaying for a piece of gear you want. If WoW is anything, it is all about the accumulation of stuff, and that requires some accumulation of wealth, to get the more expensive mounts and pets. You can either be really detail-oriented, or you can just let Auctioneer estimate a decent price and just offload stuff onto the AH, and come pick up your money from the mailbox every so often.
There's also
SpellAlerter
. This will warn you when a monster (or enemy player) is spooling up a spell, especially against yourself. Perfect, for when you want to use a Felpuppy to silence them and lock them out of an entire spellschool for several seconds.

Onijitsu, I can't tell you & the others how much I appreciate your taking the time to give such detailed & highly informative information!
I'll be checking into those addons today, Does Carbonite take the place of Questhelper? Or can it be used in addition?
Should a mid-level be concerned with glyphs at this point, or trinkets, gems etc?
I'm sure these would help our stats even at this level. We simply need a source of good advice/information on which to use, where to find them, etc. Wowhead is obviously a tremendous database, some of us have limited time to research this on our own. So it's amazing to have people like these in the forums who are, essentially, walking databases!
We, the noobs, would like to thank you for your patience & understanding, and we will someday have your back when when that big boss is wreaking havoc on your team!
Thank you!

Nevermind! haha just did my research...
From Carbonite F.A.Q.:
Q:
I use xxx quest mod and now it's broken.
A:
Carbonite provides a questing replacement; it is not designed to work with other questing mods. To avoid conflicts these types of addons should be disabled.
Replaces
(these may conflict with Carbonite features)

I'm still in noobville, but I think I can safely say you will want to use as many glyphs as you can get, and ditto for trinkets and gems, to help yourself along the way.
At your level, I believe you can use two major glyphs and two minor glyphs. As far as which two, it will depend upon your chosen spec. Asakwa's guide has
good information
. (One glyph you will ALWAYS want is Glyph of Life Tap... so that only leaves you to choose one remaining glyph)
For the
minor glyphs
, take your pick.
I personally like Kilrogg (to scout out dangerous areas, both in PvE and PvP) and Unending Breath. If you are spec'd Affliction, then I'd suggest Curse of Exhaustion. (Probably earlier than one of these other two) If Destro, I like Drain Soul, so that I can build up my soulshards quickly. Enslave Demon is also fairly practical.
As far as trinkets and gems, I'm not much of a source of information. But the afore-linked guide does have suggestions on at least gems.
One trinket I'd suggest? You'll have the ability to get an
Insignia of the Horde
once you make it to Hellfire Peninsula in Outland. (Burning Crusade content) We Warlocks are the masters of fear... but that doesn't mean we like it used on ourselves. ;-)

But if you use Carbonite (I do), you don't need to use QH or TT. Carb have the same features and a lot more.

Wow, er, (no pun intended)
Asakwa's guide:
good information
is
just
what I have been looking for!
I've bookmarked the page, and will reference it often. I picked up
Engineering
and
Mining
for the fun of it, and have them in the mid 200's. I plan on picking up
Tailoring & Jewelcrafting
on my alt, a
level 38 Tauren Druid
to benifit my Lock!
As for the
Insignia of the Horde
, I was planning on grabbing it as early as I could, I listen to
The Instance PodCast
and heard
Scott
or
Randy
mention that they used it in a certain raid because the boss used a "Fear" of some sort.
Cheers all!

That sounds viable, I want to keep Engineering, but I would have no trouble dropping Mining for Tailoring.
Jewel Crafting will be good for my Druid, but would I need to re-level mining on my Alt after having it on my main? Or do the two go together well?
I also want professions that I can make a dollar on, granted Dailies should provide all the gold I need.
Auctioneer should help as well, plus, the arrows and bullets I make in Engineering are banking fairly well at the moment.

(That's because, the consensus of this board is that your Druid is the lesser character, and your Warlock deserves the best that you can give it.)

hahaha! I must admit, my Druid is BRUTAL to level, as soon as I can get him onto my account, (I rolled him on a friends account) I'm re-speccing feral.
He's a bit too... How shall I put this... SQUISHY.
