Never heard of it, so I'm going to say this is a negative.
The gates was just a random idea, the water in the prologue title is just because the characters are currently at sea.
You should read it, possibly my favorite fantasy series. In it there's nine gates of death, however seven is another recurring number. Also, within those nine gates is a river of death that carries spirits to weak to continue through it.

Actually the Seventh Gate reminds me of two things.
A. The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman
B. By the same person who wrote Abhorsen, the Seventh Tower series.
